Shamma Bent Mohammed Launches Art Academy and Gallery in Al Ain

In a vibrant celebration of culture and creativity, Sheikh Dr. Shamma bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, Chair of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural and Educational Institutions, inaugurated the Shamma bint Mohammed Arts Academy and Shamma Gallery in Al Ain. The event, attended by over 1,000 participants, aims to provide artistic talents with opportunities for learning, experimentation, and showcasing their creative outcomes, while enhancing the role of arts in the city’s cultural landscape.

A Unique Approach to Artistic Education

The Academy is designed to integrate artistic education with practical experience through two main pathways. The first focuses on visual arts, covering drawing, painting, Arabic calligraphy, sculpture, design, digital arts, and content creation. The second pathway encompasses auditory and performing arts, including music, theatre, vocal performance, and expressive arts. This structure allows participants to explore diverse artistic fields and develop their unique styles.

Connecting with the Cultural Heritage of Al Ain

During her opening speech, Sheikh Dr. Shamma highlighted the initiative’s connection to Al Ain’s rich cultural heritage, which has preserved traces of human presence for thousands of years, from the Hili Graves and Jebel Hafeet to Al Jahili Fort and the Al Ain Oasis. She remarked, “In a city that taught the desert how to nurture its palms and showed water the calm way to flow in the aflaj until it announces its presence with shade, we stand today to open a new house of beauty.” According to her, the Academy adds not merely a building to the city’s map but a new significance to its spirit.

The Future of Art in the Age of Technology

Sheikh Dr. Shamma also posed a thought-provoking question regarding the future of art in an age dominated by artificial intelligence, where algorithms can generate images, texts, and melodies. She emphasized that the fundamental difference between humans and machines lies not just in the ability to produce art but in the human experience behind it. “Machines can mimic form, but they do not live the experience,” she explained. While technology can expand an artist’s capabilities, it lacks the memory, emotions, and experiences that imbue art with its value and meaning.

Investing in Human Imagination

She expressed that investing in human imagination is as crucial as investing in the economy, noting that access to artistic opportunities should not remain a privilege for a select few. Sheikh Dr. Shamma envisions the Academy as a space for discovering individual talents, stating, “Perhaps someone enters this place seeking a skill and leaves having discovered a part of themselves they were unaware of.”

Interactive Experiences and Collaborative Art

As part of the event, students from Al Jahili School welcomed attendees with a greeting mural, while artists Hind Khalifat, Samia Saleh, and Majda Nasr El Din conducted interactive workshops, allowing the audience to engage with various artistic techniques and styles.

Inaugural Exhibition and Artistic Showcase

Following the opening ceremony, Sheikh Dr. Shamma officially launched the Shamma Mohammed Gallery with the exhibition “Cup and Flower,” which explores the emotional undercurrents and narratives embedded in everyday details. She toured the Academy’s facilities and exhibits, including a design hall by Emirati designer Widaa Al Amri, and explored accompanying sections featuring displays of traditional art, Arabic calligraphy, environmental themes, and innovative projects.

Bringing Together the Community

The event showcased over 30 artists and involved 10 community institutions and health organisations, alongside participation from Emirati University students, Higher Colleges of Technology, and 12 schools from Al Ain. This gathering of professional artists, emerging talents, and educational institutions within the same space highlights the Academy’s mission to foster a continuous engagement with the arts, providing genuine opportunities for learning, production, and growth for aspiring artists.
