In an ongoing effort to enhance public safety, Dubai Police have seized 13,657 electric scooters for violations from the start of the year until August. The figure underscores the increasing concern regarding safe riding practices within the emirate.
Monthly Breakdown of Seized Scooters
June marked the highest number of confiscations, with a notable 2,602 electric scooters taken off the streets. This was closely followed by February, which saw 2,311 scooters seized, while January recorded 1,979. Other months also demonstrated significant numbers, including May with 1,936, March with 1,593, July with 1,348, and April with 959. In August alone, 929 scooters were seized.
Focus on Safety and Compliance
Major General Jumaa Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Traffic Department at Dubai Police, emphasised the commitment of enforcement teams to monitor and penalise riders who flout regulations. He highlighted dangerous behaviours such as riding against traffic, using footpaths, traversing through narrow alleys, and crossing streets unsafely. The importance of adhering to designated paths is critical to safeguarding both riders and pedestrians.
Moreover, riders of electric scooters are urged to strictly follow safety protocols. Key measures include wearing a compliant helmet and reflective vest, obeying traffic signals and signage, and equipping their scooters with appropriate front and rear lights as well as reflectors. Routine checks on bicycle brakes and overall scooter safety are also advised.
Call for Responsible Riding
Bin Suwaidan called for scooter riders to adopt a responsible attitude, highlighting the imperative to protect their lives and others. Compliance with traffic regulations is presented as a fundamental responsibility essential for maintaining security and safety on Dubai’s roads.
Zero Tolerance for Reckless Behaviour
Law enforcement will maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards risky behaviours by some riders, particularly those using scooters on roads where speed limits exceed 60 km/h. Authorities have designated safe and specific routes for scooter use across various areas in the emirate, yet some continue to disregard these provisions.
Dubai Police are intensifying both enforcement and awareness campaigns within zones where scooter usage is prevalent. This initiative aims to promote responsible riding habits while ensuring the safety of all road users.
