Dubai Police Achieves Remarkable Rescue of 380 Children in 15 Months

In a significant display of commitment to child safety, Dubai Police have successfully rescued 380 children over a span of just 15 months. This remarkable effort highlights the organization’s priority response to incidents involving minors. From children trapped in elevators to those locked inside vehicles under extreme heat, these incidents shed light on pressing safety concerns that families must address to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Emergency Response Protocols

Colonel Abdullah Ali Beshouh, head of the Ground Rescue Department at Dubai Police, emphasized that the department places paramount importance on child-related emergencies. “We have prioritized responding to incidents involving children through 11 rescue points distributed across the emirate,” he stated. The psychological toll of these rescues is profound, particularly if they result in severe injuries or fatalities. A moment’s inattention can transform into an unimaginable tragedy, leaving lasting scars on families.

During the past 15 months, Dubai Police have responded to approximately 301 reports, successfully rescuing around 180 children. Among these were 165 cases of children locked inside homes, 107 trapped in vehicles, and 29 stuck in elevators. Just in the first quarter of this year alone, rescuers saved 79 children, reflecting the significant responsibility families hold in safeguarding their children from everyday hazards that can lead to devastating outcomes.

Vigilance is Vital

Colonel Beshouh urged parents to refrain from leaving children unattended in vehicles, especially with the keys inside. “Children are naturally curious and may find themselves in dangerous situations if parental supervision lapses,” he cautioned. Instances have been reported where children accidentally trapped themselves in vehicles, unable to escape, particularly in modern cars that automatically lock their doors.

As the temperature soars during summer months, the risk escalates. Beshouh reminded parents to ensure all children disembark from vehicles and school buses, emphasizing that reliance on memory or assumption can have dire consequences. The response teams prioritize such calls, with an average response time of six minutes, underscoring the urgency of these incidents and their potential health implications.

Tragic Yet Preventable Incidents

The media has documented several close calls resulting from brief moments of inattention. For example, one heart-wrenching incident involved parents who forgot their infant in a car after returning home. They realized the child was still inside over an hour later, exposing them to perilous conditions.

In another alarming case, two children accidentally locked themselves in their father’s car while it was parked at home, only to be discovered too late. Colonel Beshouh highlighted that leaving children alone in vehicles—even for a few minutes—poses serious risks, explaining that a child could inadvertently shift gears or press the accelerator, creating a hazardous situation.

Awareness Beyond Vehicles

The dangers extend beyond cars to elevators and escalators in public spaces. Emergency teams frequently respond to accidents caused by children’s curiosity or lack of supervision. Many children inadvertently approach moving parts of escalators or attempt to pick up items they have dropped, risking severe injuries.

Colonel Beshouh recounted a particular incident where a child’s hand became trapped in an escalator, necessitating urgent intervention from rescue teams. Unfortunately, numerous other cases have resulted in serious injuries or even amputations due to delays in recognizing problems or the severity of injuries. He reiterated the importance of never allowing children to use elevators unattended and maintaining vigilant supervision in crowded environments, noting that a moment of distraction could lead to tragic outcomes.

Traffic accidents represent another grave danger for children. Colonel Beshouh reported that many injuries result from not using seatbelts or allowing children to move about inside vehicles while in motion. One heartbreaking incident involved a family whose vehicle collided with a parked truck, resulting in severe casualties. Protective measures often come down to simple yet significant practices, such as ensuring children are safely buckled in, closely monitoring their movements while using elevators, and confirming their presence before driving away.

Ultimately, the responsibility for child safety rests firmly with adults. By prioritizing vigilance and care, many tragic incidents could be averted, affirming that a few moments of mindfulness can safeguard children from life-altering events.
