Private Sector Employment Dominated by Construction and Retail Sectors

Recent statistics from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation have revealed significant insights into the structure of the Emirati job market, indicating that the construction and wholesale and retail trade sectors stand out as the largest employers. Together, these sectors constitute a remarkable 48.8% of the total workforce in the private sector. This figure underscores the continuing urban and commercial boom as vital pillars of economic growth, reflecting the robust dynamics of the job market.

Employment Distribution in Key Sectors

As outlined in the report, which details the distribution of registered employees in the private sector by economic activity and gender as of December 2025, the construction sector has captured approximately 30.7% of the total workforce in the private sector, representing nearly a third of all employment in this crucial area. The wholesale and retail trade sector ranks second, absorbing 18.1% of the total private sector workforce.

Leading Sectors and Their Contributions

Following the construction and trade sectors, administrative services claimed the third position with 14.3% of the workforce. The manufacturing sector also plays a critical role, encompassing 10.02% of total employment, while transportation and storage accounted for 5.6%. Other sectors, such as accommodation and food services, along with professional, scientific, and technical activities, represented smaller shares of 5.2% and 3.7%, respectively.

Gender Distribution in Employment

With regards to the gender distribution of the workforce, notable trends emerge. The construction and trade sectors together dominate male employment, with a combined 52.54% share, where the construction sector alone comprises 34.36%. Conversely, female workers tend to gravitate towards service, educational, and healthcare roles, with administrative services being the top sector for women at 19.9%, followed closely by wholesale and retail trade at 17.4%.

Implications for Economic Resilience

The insights generated from these statistics reflect not only the resilience of the UAE’s economy but also the ongoing commitment to gender balance and women’s empowerment in vital fields like education and healthcare. The ongoing diversification of the workforce, with a notable increase in female participation, reinforces the nation’s efforts to enhance global competitiveness and build a sustainable knowledge economy.

As the construction and wholesale and retail trade sectors continue to attract significant portions of the workforce—48.8% combined—these sectors remain essential in shaping the economic landscape of the UAE, supporting ongoing growth and innovation.
