Inspiring Stories from the Arab World
This week’s episode of BBC Extra discussed the importance of investment for young people in the Middle East and North Africa and the opportunities it offers. In the studio, we hosted Moroccan real estate investor Mohammed Lashkar, who began his investment journey at the age of twenty-three and became the owner of more than 13 hotel units by the age of thirty. Mohammed emphasizes that “my journey was not easy,” as it required significant effort and sacrifices to achieve what he has accomplished.
Investing Wisely and Consciously
Joining the discussion via video call was Emirati financial investor Ali Al-Hamadi, whose initial motivation was to achieve job stability. However, he soon realized that investment could provide him with a better opportunity for economic growth. Ali highlights some attractive assets for young people, such as stocks, real estate, and cryptocurrencies, stressing the importance of long-term planning and the need to avoid high-risk investments that could lead to substantial losses.
Courageous Initiatives Amid Challenges
On another note, engineer and entrepreneur Heba Al-Jaradi shared her story from Yemen, where she established a project to renovate homes damaged by war. Heba provided opportunities for women to work with her on the project, contributing to their support and empowerment to become entrepreneurs. This initiative reflects how young people view investment as a means to create positive change in their communities.
Transitioning to Success
We also met Saudi youth Ahmed Tahseen, who faced significant challenges after losing his job in the restaurant industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ahmed later turned to entrepreneurship by founding an e-commerce company and successfully became known as the top trader in the Middle East and North Africa.
