UAE Space Mission to Asteroid Belt Set for 2028 Launch

The UAE Space Agency has announced its readiness to launch the Asteroid Belt mission in the first quarter of 2028. According to Mohsen Al Awadi, Director of the Missions Department at the agency, the unveiling of the lander—designed, developed, assembled, and tested entirely in the UAE in under two years—marks one of the mission’s key engineering achievements and highlights the progress of the nation’s technical capabilities in deep space exploration.

Missions and Technical Readiness

Al Awadi explained that the lander has successfully passed the necessary technical and environmental tests to ensure its flight readiness. This mission will execute one of the most complex operations, which entails separating from the “Mohammed bin Rashid Spacecraft” and approaching the surface of the asteroid “Justitia 269,” the final destination of the mission. Here, the lander will capture detailed images that will aid in studying the asteroid’s characteristics.

Timeline and Journey

He confirmed that the mission is progressing according to schedule and is on track for launch in the first quarter of 2028, embarking on an eight-year journey covering approximately five billion kilometres. The probe is expected to reach its first targeted asteroid, “Westerwald 10253,” in February 2030, after which it will continue its journey to the remaining asteroids.

Scientific Goals and Research

The mission focuses on studying the origins of water-rich asteroids and their evolutionary stages, aiming to understand their physical and chemical properties as well as their mineral composition. This research is expected to contribute significantly to our understanding of the raw materials that participated in the formation of the solar system.

Comparative Study of Asteroids

Al Awadi highlighted that exploring seven asteroids in a single mission enables scientists to compare their characteristics, compositions, and origins. This comparative analysis will assist researchers in constructing a more comprehensive understanding of the processes that have contributed to the formation and evolution of these celestial bodies.

Furthermore, the mission team presented ten technical papers at the International Space Navigation Conference 2026, discussing various aspects of mission development, engineering challenges, and associated research.
