An Emirati company is establishing a photovoltaic solar power station in Central Africa, an innovative project aimed at enhancing the availability of clean energy in the region. Global South Utilities (GSU), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi-based Resources Investment, has announced plans to build a 50-megawatt solar power station in the city of Sakai. This project is considered a strategic step toward promoting the transition to sustainable energy sources and improving the electrical situation in the Central African Republic.
Details of the Station and Its Environmental Role
The 50-megawatt photovoltaic solar power station will provide electricity to more than 300,000 homes across the country. Additionally, the station is expected to contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 50,000 tons annually. As part of efforts to enhance the stability of the electrical grid, the project will include a 10-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system.
Economic and Social Benefits
This project will not only support clean energy but will also contribute to the creation of new job opportunities and enhance economic development. The project program includes hiring local talents and transferring technical knowledge, thereby strengthening the capabilities of communities in the Central African Republic.
Government Collaboration and Future Impacts
The project launch ceremony was attended by His Excellency Faustin Archange Touadéra, President of the Central African Republic, along with several ministers and senior officials. In his statements, Ali Al-Shammari, the managing director and CEO of the company, affirmed that “the project will contribute to providing energy supplies for local communities and reflects our commitment to delivering clean and flexible energy solutions in areas that some may consider challenging.”
International Relations and Energy Sustainability
This project is part of the comprehensive economic partnership between the UAE and the Central African Republic, signed in March 2025, aimed at enhancing trade and investment cooperation. The photovoltaic solar power station is part of Global South Utilities’ growing portfolio of clean energy projects on the African continent, demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to supporting climate solutions and effective economic partnerships.
