UAE and WHO Mark Milestone in Socotra Nutrition Initiative

The initiative between the United Arab Emirates and the World Health Organization has made significant strides in combating malnutrition in Socotra. Recently, the first phase of their collaborative effort concluded, marking an important milestone in the fight against nutritional deficiencies among women and children on the island. This initiative, which began in late May, spans a full year and unfolds across multiple stages, reflecting a comprehensive approach to enhance community health and nutrition.

Completion of the Initial Assessment Phase

Field teams from the UAE and the World Health Organization, in coordination with Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population, have successfully concluded the first phase of essential comprehensive assessments under this joint initiative aimed at combating malnutrition. This phase involved thorough evaluations that are crucial to understanding the extent of health and nutrition challenges faced by the local population. The assessment covered 38 areas in 29 sub-districts across Socotra Island and was executed with the intention of providing a solid foundation for future interventions.

Impressive Data Collection and Community Engagement

Initial results from the assessment indicate that an impressive 93% of targeted healthcare facilities were surveyed, surpassing predefined objectives. Data was collected from 4,214 families, with field teams conducting over 930 interviews with healthcare providers. In addition, anthropometric measurements were taken from children and mothers. The outreach included 12 focus group discussions with various community segments and 15 detailed interviews with representatives from local authorities, donors, and UN agencies. This extensive engagement allowed teams to gather critical feedback from 546 beneficiaries, aimed at continuously improving the quality of services delivered.

Next Steps and Future Phases

Following the initial assessment, the next phase involves a rigorous review and analysis of the collected data to prepare a final report detailing the current health and nutrition status of mothers and children on Socotra Island. This report will also evaluate the readiness and performance of healthcare facilities in providing necessary services and responding to medical emergencies. Ongoing planning based on evidence is essential to define required intervention strategies, ensuring that emergency response activities align with the actual needs and priorities of the identified health facilities.

Sustainable Impact Through Continued Collaboration

The upcoming phases of this joint initiative will include the procurement and distribution of medical and non-medical supplies, as well as a series of health awareness activities tailored to the health priorities of Socotra Island. Through continuous collaboration between the UAE, the World Health Organization, and Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population, along with several strategic partners, the program aims for sustainable impacts that significantly improve public health indicators among the most vulnerable population segments.
