In recent discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties, the UAE and the Philippines are exploring mechanisms to stimulate trade and investment flows, reflecting a growing commitment to enhancing economic cooperation. Both nations are investigating innovative strategies aimed at increasing trade and investment under an economic partnership agreement established last July. This collaboration highlights significant opportunities for market expansion and joint ventures, particularly in key sectors vital to both economies.
Strategic Meeting Highlights Economic Relations
His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, convened a meeting with the Filipino Business Council in the UAE to discuss mechanisms for stimulating trade and investment flows. The discussion underscored ongoing efforts to build and expand partnerships between the business communities and private sectors of both nations.
Impressive Trade Figures Demonstrate Growing Ties
During the meeting, Al Zeyoudi emphasized the impressive growth of economic relations between the UAE and the Philippines. Notably, non-oil trade reached $940 million in 2024, maintaining its upward trajectory into 2025, with trade exchanges valued at $257.7 million in the first quarter. The UAE stands out as the largest export market for the Philippines among Arab and African countries, ranking seventeenth globally. Such figures illustrate a solid foundation for the two countries to broaden their economic cooperation and partnerships.
The Philippines as a Key Trade Partner
“The Philippines is a key trading partner for the UAE within the promising ASEAN region,” remarked Al Zeyoudi. He expressed a joint commitment to continually enhance relations at all levels, addressing any challenges that Filipino businesses face in the UAE and vice versa. The Philippines is recognized as one of the fastest-growing economies in the ASEAN bloc, emerging as a logistics and manufacturing hub. In 2024, its economy expanded by 5.6%, making it the second-fastest-growing economy in ASEAN, which collectively represents the fourth-largest economic bloc globally, with a GDP of $4.13 trillion.
New Horizons for Collaborative Ventures
With a sizable Filipino community in the UAE working predominantly in vital sectors such as construction, healthcare, and hospitality, the meeting also aimed to explore ways to enhance this community’s contribution to mutual growth through deeper economic ties. Upon implementation, the comprehensive economic partnership agreement between the UAE and the Philippines is expected to stimulate trade and investment flows, opening new avenues for partnerships in core sectors such as agriculture, financial services, and electrical equipment.
This agreement represents a substantial addition to the UAE’s plans to broaden its non-oil foreign trade. Projections suggest it will contribute an increase of $2.4 billion to the UAE’s GDP and elevate exports to the Philippines to $7.62 billion by 2032.
