With a Family Donation, Emirati Child “Ahmed” Survives Rare Liver Disease
Emirati child Ahmed Yahya Al-Yasi has become one of the few survivors globally of a rare liver disease, thanks to a complex liver transplant performed in Abu Dhabi. This poignant story highlights his family’s donation and the role of modern medicine in saving this young boy’s life.
A Story of Courage and Hope
Last April, baby Ahmed underwent a 12-hour liver transplant, one of the most complex procedures for children in the region. A precise portion of the donor’s liver was tailored to fit his narrow abdominal cavity, reflecting the expertise and dedication of the medical team.
Several months prior, Ahmed’s future was uncertain after he exhibited abnormally high liver enzyme levels. His health quickly deteriorated, and following necessary medical tests, he was diagnosed with a rare congenital disorder related to the “ATP6AP1” gene. This disorder is considered extremely rare, with known cases worldwide numbering fewer than 25.
Medical Challenges and Family Donation
When Ahmed underwent the transplant, he was less than five months old and weighed only 4.4 kilograms, making him the smallest child to receive this procedure in the UAE. His aunt donated a portion of her liver, demonstrating the strength of family bonds and their support during critical moments.
The operation was overseen by Dr. Gourab Sen, director of the Burjeel multi-organ transplant program, who emphasized the complexity of the surgery, as the liver piece was carefully shaped to fit the child’s size. Each blood vessel was smaller than a matchstick, requiring a high level of precision and coordination among the various teams.
Positive Outcomes and Ongoing Care
Thanks to the successful operation and the intensive care Ahmed received, the child has begun to grow well with continuous improvement in liver function. He is now receiving nutritional support and medical follow-up as part of a long-term care program under the supervision of a specialized medical team.
Ahmed’s story exemplifies the profound impact of organ donation and the role of family support in saving lives. This case serves as an inspiring example of how medical and familial efforts can come together to achieve success and overcome challenges. On the occasion of World Organ Donation Day, the importance of this charitable act in saving lives is highlighted.
