In an effort to promote Emirati culture on the global stage, the Sharjah Book Authority has solidified its international presence through 15 significant participations in the first half of 2026. These initiatives took place across various regions, including Arab capitals, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Promoting Emirati Culture Worldwide
The Sharjah Book Authority’s strategic engagement has exemplified a model rooted in knowledge exchange, international partnerships, and the expansion of Arabic literature and translation. This approach not only elevates Sharjah’s status within the national cultural framework but also underlines its role in connecting publishers, libraries, and creatives in the region with their global counterparts.
Vision and Leadership
According to Ahmad bin Rakkad al-Amiri, the Authority’s CEO, these international participations reflect the UAE’s ongoing commitment to cultural presence globally. They are aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who has placed knowledge at the heart of development. Furthermore, they resonate with the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Authority, to nurture a sustainable knowledge economy and broaden the reach of Arabic culture in international markets.
A Gateway for Book Industry Development
Al-Amiri emphasised that Sharjah actively engages in every major cultural event worldwide as a partner in the development of the book industry. This participation has established the emirate as a central hub for publishers, authors, libraries, and cultural institutions globally, positioning Sharjah as an ambassador for Arab and Emirati culture to new audiences and markets.
Impact Measurement and Future Collaborations
The Authority assesses the impact of each participation by analysing the pathways it opens for book creators, its influence on translation efforts, and the discourse surrounding content exchange among different cultures. Additionally, the collaborations fostered during these events promise to lead to sustained partnerships with cultural and professional institutions around the globe.
Showcasing Sharjah’s Book Ecosystem
The Authority kicked off its international presence at the New Delhi World Book Fair, where it engaged with Indian publishers and institutions to showcase Sharjah’s publishing ecosystem. This initiative aimed to encourage Indian publishers to consider Sharjah as a base for their operations in the region and to enhance content exchange between the Arab and Indian markets, highlighting the organisational and professional infrastructure the emirate provides for the publishing sector.
Regional and International Conferences
In addition to its participation in the New Delhi World Book Fair, the Sharjah Book Authority contributed to the Cairo International Book Fair, presenting various initiatives for publishers, scholars, and institutions. The Authority also took part in the Damascus International Book Fair to strengthen ties among cultural institutions and publishers in the region.
Expanding Networks in Europe
Further broadening its horizons, the Authority participated in the London Book Fair and the Leipzig Book Fair in Germany. These events served to enhance their relationships with publishers, agents, and cultural organisations, while also showcasing the opportunities available in Sharjah for book industry professionals and content creators.
