The airports in the UAE have experienced exceptional growth in passenger traffic, recording approximately 71 million travelers in the first half of this year, compared to 67 million in the same period last year, reflecting an increase of 6%. These figures are particularly notable at Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport, where this remarkable growth has continued amidst the busy holiday and tourism season.
Dubai International Airport: Increasing Momentum
Dubai International Airport welcomed 46 million passengers during the first half of this year, up from 44.9 million in the same period last year. This growth demonstrates the airport’s resilience and ability to absorb shocks, achieving a growth rate of 2.3%. During the second quarter of the year, the airport received 22.5 million passengers, reflecting strong performance despite challenges in the airspace.
Abu Dhabi International Airport: Notable Growth
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi airports, particularly Abu Dhabi International Airport, performed remarkably, receiving 15.5 million passengers, an increase of 13.2% compared to June of last year. This growth is a direct result of expanding the airport’s destination network, with 16 new destinations added and airlines like China Eastern Airlines being attracted, enhancing the UAE’s presence on the global travel map.
Sharjah International Airport: Strong Performance
In a separate context, Sharjah International Airport demonstrated strong operational performance, with the number of passengers rising to 9.1 million, an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year. Aircraft movements also grew by 4.3%, showing the airport’s ability to adapt to rising demand. Ground handling services and the expansion of the air network position the airport as a leading choice for travelers.
Positive Growth Across the Sector
On a broader scale, the General Civil Aviation Authority recorded a 10% increase in passenger traffic, bringing the total to 147.8 million passengers, compared to 134 million in 2023. It is expected that UAE airports will welcome around 159 million passengers this year, reflecting the ongoing exceptional growth in passenger traffic at UAE airports.
The outstanding performance of UAE airports underscores the strength and potential of the sector, highlighting the strategic importance of these airports as vital hubs connecting global cultures and economies. Continuous enhancement of infrastructure and services bolsters these airports’ ability to adapt to changing conditions and meet the increasing market demands.
