IAEA Praises UAE Collaboration Despite Barakah Nuclear Safety Issues

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has lauded the ongoing collaboration between the UAE and the agency, emphasizing that attacks aimed at the Barakah nuclear power plant pose significant threats to nuclear safety. The agency’s Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, highlighted the importance of timely and accurate information sharing regarding nuclear facilities potentially impacted by such attacks, underlining the critical role of immediate communication with the IAEA’s incident and emergency center.

Strengthening Nuclear Safety through Cooperation

During a briefing to the United Nations Security Council, Grossi acknowledged the UAE’s commitment to nuclear safety and its efforts to keep the agency informed about the situation surrounding nuclear plants. He reiterated that the IAEA will continue to provide public updates on the effects of conflicts on nuclear sites and the consequent health and environmental risks while maintaining consistent dialogue with regional governments.

Threats to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

Grossi informed Council members that the attack on the Barakah nuclear power station represents a direct threat to the nuclear safety of the UAE. He reassured that radiation levels at the plant remain within normal parameters, and no injuries have been reported. The recent unmanned aerial vehicle strike, which occurred last Sunday, resulted in a fire in an external electricity generator, but the core facility remains secure.

Risks of Military Activities

Grossi cautioned that military operations targeting nuclear plants and other related facilities carry undeniable risks. He urged all parties involved in conflicts to exercise the utmost restraint. He disclosed that since last year, the IAEA has been gathering data, analyzing, and assessing emergency preparedness and response capabilities, with future plans to visit the Gulf region to enhance this critical collaborative effort.

Call for Respecting Humanitarian Law

The IAEA Director General emphasized that attacks on nuclear installations intended for peaceful purposes are unacceptable, reinforcing that nuclear power plants must be protected under international humanitarian law. He called upon all entities embroiled in conflicts to adhere to the seven fundamental pillars necessary for ensuring nuclear safety and security, warning against the serious consequences of military actions against nuclear plants and other facilities.

As the situation unfolds, the IAEA remains committed to fostering a secure environment for nuclear operations in the UAE and throughout the region, holding the line on safety protocols amidst growing tensions.
