Historical Archive Enriches Research with Comprehensive Regional Resources

The launch of the “مجمع التواريخ” serves as a pivotal resource for researchers, bringing together essential documents and records from the region. This comprehensive compilation not only enriches academic pursuits but also preserves the historical narrative of the Arabian Peninsula and Persia. Through the meticulous work of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the archive aims to facilitate a deeper understanding of the past, ensuring that the voices of history are accessible to all scholars.

Insights from Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi

In a recent television interview with Mr. Mohamed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi elaborated on his latest work, titled “مجمع التواريخ لشبه الجزيرة العربية وفارس أحداث في حوليات من عام 1622م إلى 1810م.” He explained that this extensive compilation builds upon his previous publication, “البرتغاليون في بحر عُمان,” presenting an in-depth account of the region’s history through chronologically organized events. The “مجمع التواريخ” consists of 33 volumes in Arabic and the same in English, encompassing 1,473 documents, all of which are also available on a USB drive.

His Highness emphasized that the archive’s title reflects its role in consolidating all relevant documents pertaining to this historical period. It includes English, Dutch, French, and Ottoman records, alongside references to Portuguese documents previously detailed in his earlier work. In the forewords to the first twelve volumes, he notes: “For further insights into the events occurring from 1622 to 1645, readers may refer to ‘البرتغاليون في بحر عُمان.'” This highlights the interconnectedness of these historical accounts and the richness of the narrative presented.

Historical Significance of the Documents

Sheikh Dr. Sultan described how the arrival of the Portuguese marked a significant turning point in regional control, leading to their influence over maritime routes, including the Gulf and the Red Sea, culminating in the fall of Hormuz in 1622. Following this, various nations sought to capitalize on the area’s trade potential. Notably, the English and Dutch played pivotal roles in expelling the Portuguese, with the latter having sought the English’s assistance to reclaim control of strategic coastal cities in Oman.

His Highness shared insights into the commodities that fueled trade during this era. European demand for silk and cotton, alongside the spice trade from India, drove nations to vie for dominance in the region. He noted that the trade routes, particularly the Silk Road, were paramount for accessing these vital goods, with Oman acting as a crucial hub for merchants navigating these complex networks.

A Wealth of Rare Archives

Sheikh Dr. Sultan detailed his extensive collection of various archives, predominantly found in the “مجمع التواريخ.” These historical records serve not only as a vital resource for scholars but also as a testament to the region’s rich history. His collections include diaries and documents from English companies operating in Basra and Gombroon, shedding light on the intricate histories of these trade hubs. He distinguished between the meticulous documentation practices of the Dutch versus the more narrative style of the English records.

The challenge of translating and documenting Ottoman archives, primarily written in Turkish, further reflects the complexities involved in preserving these historical narratives. Highlighting the evolution of French involvement in the region, His Highness addressed the scarcity of French documents due to historical conflicts and their late return to the Gulf as mere political and commercial entities.

Empowering Future Generations of Researchers

In his efforts to facilitate research, Sheikh Dr. Sultan underscored the importance of the “مجمع التواريخ” as a resource to assist scholars in navigating the wealth of information available. He has provided a researcher’s guide to aid in efficiently locating relevant documents across the extensive volumes. His Highness reminds researchers that primary sources take precedence over aggregated documents and encourages accurate citation practices to maintain the integrity of academic work.

Noting the growing interest in his earlier publication, “البرتغاليون في بحر عُمان,” among scholars from diverse backgrounds, he expressed hope that the “مجمع التواريخ” would yield significant contributions to historical understanding. By interweaving these narratives, His Highness aims to ensure that future generations can draw upon this wealth of knowledge to explore and preserve the region’s historical identity.

As he concluded the discussion, Sheikh Dr. Sultan reaffirmed his commitment to enriching the cultural and academic landscape through initiatives like the Sharjah International Book Fair. He envisions a future where educational opportunities abound, enabling the preservation of authentic Arab heritage while fostering a deeper appreciation for the scholarly pursuit of knowledge.
