In a gripping account of bravery and quick thinking, Fly Dubai pilot Smit Matshahr has revealed the harrowing moments he experienced in the cockpit after sustaining a severe blow to the back of his head. Realising that his survival depended on immediate action, he found himself internally urging, “You cannot die like this.”
Critical Moments in the Cockpit
During a recent interview with Sky News Arabia, Matshahr recounted how, in that critical moment, he understood that inaction could lead to his demise. “Yes, there came a moment when I realised that,” he stated, adding, “I told myself: do something, you cannot die like this.”
Desperate Measures
He clarified that it wasn’t a moment of accepting death; instead, it was a call to action. Following the shock, Matshahr described how, when the cockpit door finally opened, the scene transformed dramatically. “I remember lying on my face, and of course, there was panic and screaming,” he said, reflecting on the chaos that ensued.
Acknowledging Teamwork
The pilot took a moment to commend the actions of his co-pilot, who stepped in to control the aircraft and played a vital role in averting disaster. “What he did deserves recognition,” Matshahr declared, emphasising that he will carry that appreciation with him for the rest of his life.
Flight Diversion and Safety Assurance
The incident involved Fly Dubai Flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv but was diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia on September 30 due to a security incident in the cockpit. At the time, the airline confirmed the safety of all passengers and crew members on board, numbering 172 in total.
