The UAE-based company Aimia Power, a leader in renewable energy, announced its significant participation in the expansion project of the water desalination plant in Agadir, Morocco. This project, executed by the Spanish utility group Cox, has a budget of up to 250 million euros (approximately 288 million dollars) and will enhance the plant’s capacity to produce drinking water, contributing to the needs of the local population and agriculture in the region.
Expansion Project Details
Aimia Power is working on expanding the water desalination plant in Agadir, which will add 125,000 cubic meters per day to the current production capacity, bringing the total to 400,000 cubic meters per day. This expansion will enable the plant to meet the drinking water needs of about two million people and irrigate 13,600 hectares of agricultural land in a water-scarce area. The project primarily aims to improve water conditions for the local community and enhance agricultural production.
Renewable Energy Sources
The water desalination plant will rely on energy generated from the wind power station in the Laayoune area, which will be operated by Aimia Power with a production capacity of 150 megawatts. The plant is expected to begin production by 2027, ensuring the sustainability of the project through the use of renewable energy sources.
Importance of the Project
With this project, the Agadir water desalination plant will become Aimia Power’s first facility in North Africa and one of the largest desalination plants on the continent.
