Dubai-based drydock operator DP World has completed a major ship recycling project for APT Global Marine, recovering more than 20,000 tonnes of steel, machinery and other materials for sustainable reuse at its Dubai facility. The work marks another step in strengthening the United Arab Emirates’ position as a regional centre for ship recycling carried out to the highest environmental standards.
A complex Aframax recycling operation
The project was among the most technically demanding ship recycling jobs undertaken in the region. It involved dismantling and recycling an Aframax-class vessel that arrived with extensive fire damage, along with more than 1,000 tonnes of solidified cargo residues and about 2,500 tonnes of fuel oil waste.
These conditions required detailed engineering assessments, strict environmental controls and specialised dismantling procedures at every stage of the operation.
Materials recovered and processed
The project was completed in 120 days. During that period, DP World safely removed and processed around 14,500 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as 3,500 tonnes of machinery, pipes and cables.
In addition, hazardous materials and hydrocarbon waste that required specialist treatment were also handled as part of the recycling process.
Supporting green recycling in Dubai
Captain Rado Antolovic, Chief Executive Officer of DP World, said: «The success of this complex project reflects the advanced engineering capabilities and strong safety and environmental standards in Dubai and the UAE, supporting responsible green ship recycling at scale and contributing to sustainable industrial growth».
