Child Marriage in the UAE Highlights Deep Cultural Divides

Child Marriage: Social and Cultural Controversy in the UAE

The phenomenon of child marriage is a contentious social and cultural issue in the UAE. Opinions on this subject vary widely; proponents argue that minors can establish stable families, while others criticize this trend as a violation of children’s rights. In this context, we will explore the positions of various stakeholders and government initiatives aimed at addressing this complex issue.

Supporters’ Perspectives

Supporters of child marriage have emerged to defend their viewpoint following a court ruling against a citizen who promoted this type of marriage. They believe that the man in his fifties did not err in marrying a minor and that society as a whole has become accustomed to such unions. They claim that minors have successfully established families without any negative impact on their lives or communities, arguing that these marriages are legitimate as long as the bride has reached the age of maturity.

Despite the common belief that childhood is a social construct, some view this notion as outdated and argue that children do not receive any special protection. However, why is the discussion limited to the marriage of minors to older men?

Challenges Regarding Minors

It is essential to address the issue of minors as a separate group. While society insists on extending the period of childhood for boys until they receive education and support, it overlooks the fact that girls in the same age group deserve equal treatment. Why are boys not sent to work like children did in the past to gain life experience from an early age? This highlights the contradictions in social norms.

In the past, many young people were forced to take on responsibilities at an early age. One example is the story of Khalifa Al-Fuqai, who began working at sea before he turned eight, navigating the waters alone. The question here is: Are boys alone expected to bear these burdens while girls are merely viewed as potential brides?

Variations in Childhood Treatment

It is interesting to observe how children are treated today compared to the past. While the Houthis and Iran are criticized for recruiting children in conflicts, we ignore that many Arab societies have grown excessively protective of boys. Should young men be expected to bear responsibilities while girls are seen only as subjects of marriage?

Historically, many boys were known to participate in military or combat roles at a young age, which is considered normal in various cultures. We must question: why is there no reconsideration of the social requirements and expectations for boys as there is for girls?

Conclusion

Unfortunately, most supporters of child marriage lack the courage to redefine childhood for all children. Should the hands of progress remain stagnant merely to satisfy unethical desires in society? It is crucial to consider the rights of both male and female children equally and to reevaluate cultural concepts surrounding maturity.
