At the 2026 Sharjah International Book Fair, Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the founder and CEO of Kalimat Group, unveiled her latest literary work, “The Conference of the Birds.” This remarkable book, published by Kalimat House in both Arabic and English, attracted a large audience during its two-hour launch event.
A Modern Retelling of a Literary Classic
In “The Conference of the Birds,” Sheikha Bodour presents a contemporary literary interpretation of the renowned narrative by Persian poet Farid ud-Din Attar. Aimed at readers aged 8 to 12, the book takes young readers on a journey of self-discovery and inner transformation, emphasising values such as courage, perseverance, altruism, self-confidence, and the importance of collaboration in overcoming challenges and instigating change.
An Environmental Message
The illustrated book, featuring artwork by artist Noushin Sadeghian, carries an environmental message rooted in a world where forests are dwindling and air pollution is rampant. The narrative poses critical questions about humanity’s responsibility to protect life and highlights the role of collective efforts in restoring hope and building a better future.
A Journey Through Symbolism and Landscape
The story commences with a gathering of birds beneath the magical Waq Waq tree, responding to the call of the wise hoopoe. With forests fading and smoke clouding the sky, these birds embark on a quest to rescue their world. Led by the hoopoe, they journey through seven valleys, aiming to reach the mythical mountain of Qaf where the legendary Simurgh resides, hoping to find answers to their pressing questions.
However, the adventure transcends mere physical distances; the birds face their fears and strive to liberate themselves from burdens that weigh them down. Through their shared experiences, they learn to navigate their path together, transforming their perspectives on both the world and themselves.
Interweaving Tradition with Modernity
“The Conference of the Birds” draws on one of the most celebrated stories from literary heritage, reinterpreting its symbolic elements—chiefly the hoopoe, the Simurgh, and the seven valleys—while connecting the birds’ journey to contemporary human and environmental issues. Nature is depicted as an integral part of the world the birds seek to protect, turning their journey into a profound meditation on responsibility, perseverance, self-confidence, and altruism.
The book, featuring illustrations by Noushin Sadeghian, will be available in both Arabic and English editions, proudly bearing the name of Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, who was honoured with the Bologna Ragazzi Award in 2025. “The Conference of the Birds” promises to inspire young minds, encouraging them to embrace their collective strengths and make meaningful contributions toward a sustainable future.
