The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially inaugurated the Gulf Street Tunnel, a significant infrastructure development that stretches 1,650 metres from the end of the Infinity Bridge ramp in Deira to the intersection of Gulf Street and Al Wahda Street. The tunnel features three lanes in each direction and boasts a capacity of 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. This opening marks an essential phase in the ongoing development of the Shindagha Corridor, aligning with the leadership’s directives to enhance the city’s road network and infrastructure in response to the rapid urban and population growth in Dubai.
Enhancing Traffic Flow and Connectivity
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, the Gulf Street Tunnel represents a critical advancement in the Shindagha Corridor project, regarded as one of the most strategic infrastructure initiatives within Dubai’s road network. The new tunnel is designed to integrate major traffic corridors and provide sustainable traffic solutions that can accommodate the continuous growth in vehicle movement, thereby facilitating the ongoing urban and economic development of the emirate. It aims to support Dubai’s objectives of creating a safe, smooth, and sustainable transportation system.
Supporting Urban Development in Deira
Al Tayer highlighted the tunnel’s role in augmenting the road network in the Deira area, which is experiencing rapid commercial and urban expansion. Key development projects are underway, including new residential and tourist attractions in regions such as Abu Hail, Al Wahda, and Al Mamzar, along with broader initiatives like Dubai Islands, the Waterfront Market, and Hamriya Port. The tunnel is expected to significantly improve traffic flow along Gulf Street, facilitating easier access for motorists coming from the Infinity Bridge towards Deira and Al Mamzar, while better connecting residential areas to commercial centres and tourist spots.
Time-Saving Commute and Project Impact
The Gulf Street Tunnel is part of a broader 13-kilometre plan for the Shindagha Corridor, which includes the upgrade of 15 intersections that serve vital residential areas and major developmental projects like Dubai Islands, the Dubai Marina, and Rashid Port. The project is projected to benefit around one million inhabitants while reducing travel times significantly, from 1 hour and 44 minutes to just 16 minutes by 2030. This improvement highlights the project’s positive impact on enhancing traffic efficiency and road network performance in Dubai.
Traffic Flow Improvements
The construction of the tunnel was meticulously executed, featuring three lanes in each direction, which allows for free movement for vehicles travelling between Deira and the Infinity Bridge, efficiently managing a capacity of 12,000 vehicles per hour. The project also involved transforming roundabouts on Cairo and Al Wahda Streets into signalised intersections and implementing substantial traffic enhancements on Cairo Street. Additionally, the new tunnel connects the bridge ramp from Dubai Islands to Gulf Street heading towards Al Mamzar, facilitating smoother access for traffic and supporting economic and tourist activities in the area.
Safety and Efficiency in Construction
Notably, the project achieved a remarkable milestone by accumulating approximately 11 million working hours without any reported injuries, showcasing exemplary safety management throughout its execution. This achievement reflects the effective coordination of 2,200 engineers, technicians, and workers, alongside 350 pieces of heavy and light machinery. Moreover, about 77% of the tunnel excavation materials, totaling around 522,000 cubic metres, were recycled for use in other RTA projects and with various entities.
Artistic Enhancement of Urban Infrastructure
In alignment with the “Dubai Tunnels” initiative, the Gulf Street Tunnel will be transformed into a comprehensive artistic installation that enhances the aesthetic and urban landscape of Dubai. The artwork, designed by Emirati artist Maryam Al Hathboor, depicts Dubai’s skyline using intricate patterns reminiscent of currency designs, capturing the economic essence of the surrounding area. This artistic rendition will feature a mural along the tunnel’s walls, showcasing key landmarks in Dubai’s horizon, including the Infinity Bridge, as drivers pass through, providing a dynamic visual experience that embodies the development and innovation of the city.
Future Developments in the Shindagha Corridor
The RTA plans to complete the development of the Shindagha Corridor in Bur Dubai by 2025, which will include a new direct entry and exit from the Dubai Islands project. A 1,425-metre bridge will be erected over Dubai Creek between the Infinity Bridge and the Rashid Port development area, facilitating four lanes in each direction and an overall capacity of approximately 16,000 vehicles per hour. The bridge will rise 18.5 metres above sea level, allowing various types of vessels to pass through the creek, and will include a dedicated pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, complete with elevators for easier access, along with surface roadways extending about 2,000 metres for enhanced connectivity to the existing road network from both sides of the Dubai Islands and Bur Dubai.
