In a realm where the imaginative spirit of artists intertwines with the frontiers of technology, and where the arts intersect with science, data, and artificial intelligence, new dimensions of creative expression emerge. This fusion opens expansive avenues for human experience, contemplation, and discovery.
Amidst questions of identity and consciousness, sustainability challenges, and the potentials of digital media, the boundaries of art are expanding to engage with pressing human and global issues, reshaping the audience’s relationship with art.
Exploring New Horizons
Last night, the “Night Under the Stars” event, organised by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority as part of the 31st edition of the International Conference on Digital and Emerging Arts (ISEA 2026), highlighted this creative movement. The gathering took place under the stunning Al Wasl Dome at Expo City Dubai, featuring discussions that explored artists’ visions and experiences at the intersection of art and technology, illustrating the new horizons that emerging technologies provide for creativity and cultural communication.
In a statement to Al Bayan, Maitha Ali Al Blooshi, Director of the Emerging Arts Department at Dubai Culture and Project Director for ISEA 2026, stressed the significance of the international conference as a leading global platform dedicated to empowering artists to broaden their knowledge and embrace diverse experiences across various fields. She noted that the conference focuses on exploring the intersections of art with science and technology, providing opportunities to learn from best practices while facilitating the development of strong networks with experts to enhance current practices and acquire new skills.
Al Blooshi highlighted that as artists engage with various data and information, they enrich their individual experiences. She pointed out that an artist’s perspective arises from their feelings and unique viewpoints; they are not confined to certain mediums but instead create varied experiences that harness the potential of emerging and digital arts to benefit humanity and present data in innovative and tangible forms to the public.
Innovative Technologies
Israa Ozkan, Producer of the ISEA 2026 conference and a specialist in digital and media arts, indicated that this edition features two artworks representing Spain and Germany. The participating artists convey their human emotions and personal experiences through their modern technological expressions.
Ozkan confirmed that 2026 will host over 100 artworks distributed throughout the city as part of a comprehensive plan to enliven urban spaces, involving more than 20 active venues. Each location will showcase a diverse range of artistic categories, including immersive spaces, interactive works, advanced projection displays, and kinetic art pieces.
Visitors to the exhibitions will be able to explore multiple categories under prominent sub-themes such as the environment, sustainability, artistic formations, and generative artificial intelligence artworks, reflecting the creative diversity and Dubai’s embrace of contemporary art forms.
Deep Questions
Michael Ang, a professor of interactive media at New York University Abu Dhabi, noted that his exhibited artwork primarily focuses on artificial intelligence techniques and concepts of self-identity, extending into matters of self-awareness within these newly created entities. He stated that art is a powerful and effective platform for posing profound and thought-provoking questions, providing artists with genuine opportunities to engage with modern technologies while enriching audiences with rich experiences that enable interaction with these vital themes.
In this context, Ang discussed the role of shared cultural dialogue, emphasising that hosting such events in Dubai offers an exceptional opportunity to connect with diverse audience segments and cultures. He remarked that the “Cyber Listening Group” includes representatives from various countries and cultural experiences, allowing the integration of diverse insights into a single narrative, expressing his excitement to present this unique experience in Dubai.
New Perspectives
Suleiman Lopez, an artist specialising in the intersection of art, science, and technology, highlighted that his role as an artist centres around raising awareness and understanding toward the responsible and conscious use of modern technologies. He explained that art serves as an exceptional tool and vital bridge for imparting new ideas and perspectives to audiences while fostering positive behaviours that align with the challenges facing our planet today.
Lopez pointed out that the present phase is ripe with opportunities for engagement and impact, asserting that art must play its proactive role as a primary tool to inspire creative minds and the emerging generations. At the conclusion of his comments, Lopez expressed deep appreciation for the renewed opportunity to be in Dubai and participate for the third time in the “Siji Dubai” exhibition, looking forward to continuing his involvement in regional cultural gatherings.
Broader Tools
Multidisciplinary artist, curator, and immersive experiences producer, Faisal Anwar, mentioned that the application of technology, the enhancement of audience experiences, and maintaining the essence of human empathy and artistic messaging are critical issues in the contemporary cultural landscape. He clarified that artists who create at the intersections of art and science, as well as emerging media, now possess broader tools that extend beyond creative expression to engage larger audiences with their works.
Anwar noted that today, the world is in a fast-paced environment that generates vast quantities of information and data, reshaping individual interactions and the nature of communication and content creation. He stated, “I believe that in this time and place, artists like me, who work at the intersections of these fields, have exciting potential to operate on three main levels of art: creating art, producing art, and sharing and nurturing art. These are incredibly powerful elements in our current time.”
Regarding his artistic methodology, Anwar elucidated that the hybrid nature of art-making opens avenues for producing works that are more profound and intriguing, continuing, “In my personal practices, I focus on the climate, study knowledge, and seek intersections with different knowledge systems such as scientific foundations, thinking of knowledge as a medium, and then I begin crafting works that truly engage with the audience.”
