Leading UAE Companies Driving Environmental Sustainability in 2026

In a noteworthy recognition of corporate environmental responsibility, the American magazine “Newsweek” has selected 12 Emirati companies for its annual ranking of the “Most Environmentally Sustainable Companies 2026.” This prestigious list highlights the top 850 companies across 28 countries, showcasing their efforts in reducing their environmental footprint and adhering to sustainability practices. These selections underline the growing commitment of UAE businesses to not only meet but excel in environmental sustainability initiatives.

On June 5, 2026, “Newsweek” announced the selection of 12 Emirati companies for its annual list of the “Most Environmentally Sustainable Companies 2026,” which includes the top 850 companies across 28 countries, based on their performance in environmental sustainability. This list reflects the exceptional performance of Emirati companies in reducing the environmental impact of their operational activities.

The list includes the following companies: Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company, Drake & Scull International, Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Fujairah National Bank, Abu Dhabi Ship Building, Emirates Islamic Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank, International Holding Company, and Mashreq Bank. The presence of 12 Emirati companies in this global ranking reinforces the UAE’s position as a role model for adopting environmental sustainability practices.

Ranking Criteria

“Newsweek” explained that the ranking was prepared in collaboration with the organizations “Plant-A Insights Group” and “Gest Impact.” It was based on a comprehensive analysis of sustainability data disclosed by companies. The assessment included over 8,000 companies worldwide, with the top 850 selected after applying strict criteria related to environmental performance and sustainability.

The study relied on more than 25 indicators and criteria related to sustainability, using data available up to April 2026. Companies were required to have their most recent published data after January 31, 2025. The ranking categorized companies based on key areas: greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, waste generation, and the disclosure of sustainability data.

Fair and Comprehensive Assessment

To ensure fairness among companies, environmental performance was measured based on revenue size, calculating consumption and emission intensity indicators for each company. Any company that did not disclose data for one of the indicators received a score of zero for that criterion. Jennifer H. Cunningham, editor-in-chief of “Newsweek,” emphasized that addressing the global climate crisis requires urgent commitment from the business sector, adding that the companies listed prove that environmental responsibility has now become an essential part of sustainable economic activity.

The inclusion of 12 Emirati companies in the “Most Environmentally Sustainable Companies 2026” list reflects their dedication to enhancing sustainability practices and governance services, which is indeed an achievement worthy of pride for all stakeholders in the UAE.
