Zelensky Agrees on Defense Cooperation with the UAE and Qatar During Gulf Visit
In a strategic move reflecting the importance of enhancing defense cooperation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced new agreements with both the UAE and Qatar during his recent visit to the Gulf. This visit comes at a time of increasing global tensions, making security and defense collaboration vital for the targeted regions.
Historic Agreements with Qatar
On Saturday, the Qatari Ministry of Defense announced the signing of a defense cooperation agreement with Ukraine, which includes “the exchange of expertise in countering missiles and drones.” During a remote press briefing, Zelensky confirmed that this partnership will extend for ten years, noting that Ukraine had previously entered into a similar agreement with Saudi Arabia.
Partnership with the UAE and Future Projects
After his visit to Qatar, Zelensky indicated that a similar agreement with the UAE is imminent, reflecting a mutual desire to strengthen security and defense cooperation between the two sides. Zelensky had earlier met with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, where discussions focused on collaboration in security and defense areas.
Utilizing Ukrainian Technology
During this visit, Ukraine showcased its expertise in air defense and drone technology, as Zelensky hopes to gain support from Gulf countries in its efforts to counter ongoing Russian military operations. In this context, Ukraine has sent over 200 military experts to advise on how to counter attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the region.
Ukraine’s Need for Energy and Financial Support
Zelensky emphasized the importance of securing fuel supplies for Ukraine, explaining that the country needs approximately 700,000 liters of diesel monthly, which is critical for both the military and the agricultural sector. As part of the new agreements, Zelensky agreed to secure diesel imports for Ukraine for one year, although specific details regarding these operations were not disclosed.
This visit and the steps taken by Ukraine with the UAE and Qatar embody a deep desire to enhance cooperation and achieve security and stability in the region, thereby providing vital support for Ukraine in facing current crises.
