Zayed Sustainability Prize Launches 2027 Applications with $7.2 Million Award

In an exciting development for sustainability innovation, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has opened its application process for the 2027 cycle. This prestigious award aims to foster efforts toward creating a more inclusive and sustainable world, honoring the legacy of the founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With an increased prize value of $7.2 million, the award encourages small and medium-sized enterprises, non-profit organizations, and high schools to submit their innovative solutions across six categories, including health, food, energy, water, climate action, and global high schools.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and General Director of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, emphasized the award’s role in reflecting the UAE’s commitment to supporting solutions that yield measurable and tangible impacts. He noted the enduring values of the late Sheikh Zayed, highlighting the leadership vision aimed at achieving sustainable and inclusive development. By promoting innovations and community initiatives, as well as utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Zayed Sustainability Prize continues to empower solutions that significantly enhance lives and support vulnerable communities.

Impact on Global Communities

The Zayed Sustainability Prize has positively impacted the lives of over 400 million people worldwide by backing projects that provide long-term benefits. These include expanding access to renewable energy and affordable healthcare while bolstering food and water security, thereby increasing the resilience of communities most affected by climate change. Each winner in the five categories designated for organizations receives $1 million, while six winners in the global high schools category earn $150,000 each to implement or expand their student-led initiatives in their schools and communities.

Enhanced Funding Model

Starting from the 2026 cycle, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has introduced a refined funding model that includes recognizing finalists and providing financial support to enable a broader range of innovations to flourish and enhance their tangible impact. Finalists are awarded a total of $1.3 million, with $100,000 granted to each organization selected in health, food, energy, water, and climate action categories, along with $25,000 for each school within the global high schools category.

Application Process and Criteria

To participate in the Zayed Sustainability Prize, submitted solutions must demonstrate proven results and meet the eligibility criteria encompassing impact, innovation, and inspiration. Applications are accepted in seven languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, ensuring wide global participation. The evaluation process consists of a thorough three-stage review, starting with an initial assessment to confirm compliance with eligibility criteria. An expert selection committee then conducts an in-depth evaluation to prepare a shortlist of candidates, which is presented to the jury for final winner selection across the six categories.

The application window closes on June 15, 2026, with winners set to be announced during the 2027 awards ceremony. The updated Zayed Sustainability Prize represents a significant step forward in international sustainability efforts, reaffirming the UAE’s role as a leader in fostering innovative solutions for global challenges.
