If you have ever tried to plan a family staycation, you’ll know the sums rarely add up. The children want rides and slides. The adults want a lie-in, a proper coffee and at least a small chance of relaxing. Yas Plaza Mangroves on Yas Island makes a compelling case for having it both ways.
Set beside the island’s protected mangroves and only minutes from Ferrari World, this low-key hotel feels noticeably calmer than the usual Yas Island tempo. The palette is softer, the views are greener and, before long, you are settling into a slower rhythm. The hotel says it offers “nature-inspired stays surrounded by mangroves and a slower rhythm” — and, in our experience, it does exactly that.
Suites that work for real family travel
We checked in on a Friday afternoon to a One Bedroom Suite with Sea View Balcony, and it immediately made sense for a family break. There is a proper bedroom, a separate living area for the children to spread out in, and a balcony where the morning light shifts across the water while herons drift over the mangroves below.
For families, that format is the main selling point. There is no squeezing past a sleeping child at 8pm, no argument over bathroom timings and no sense that everyone is waiting for everyone else to finish. On a two-night escape, that extra space is the real luxury.
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at midday, and the team’s ease with children was clear from the first welcome. This is a hotel that expects families rather than simply accommodating them.
The theme park ticket inclusion changes everything
The headline feature is hard to ignore: every night of your stay includes daily access to one of Yas Island’s big four theme parks — Ferrari World Yas Island, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi or SeaWorld Yas Island — with up to four tickets per bedroom, per day.
For anyone who has ever priced up theme park admission for a family of four, the value is obvious. The biggest line in the holiday budget simply disappears into the room rate.
We spent day one at Warner Bros. World, with our youngest still talking about Gotham City, then day two at Yas Waterworld, where the eldest took us straight to the slides. Two parks, one weekend, no ticket queues. And because everything on Yas Island is so close together, you can be back in the suite, showered and by the pool within half an hour of leaving the gates.
This is the formula Yas Plaza Hotels has packaged into its summer Ultimate Yas Staycation, which includes daily park tickets, breakfast, a choice of lunch or dinner, plus dining and spa discounts, from Dhs800 per night. As summer staycation value goes, it is one of the strongest offers on the island right now.
Dining without the usual decision fatigue
The dining follows the same relaxed approach — “flavours at a gentler pace”, as the hotel describes it — and with five venues on site, plus more next door, there is enough variety to keep everyone happy.
Assymetri became our morning anchor, with an all-day dining setup that combines a generous international buffet and à la carte options. It managed the difficult task of pleasing a fussy eight-year-old and a discerning adult at the same time, while the live cooking stations became a nightly highlight for the children.
Filini Garden was the standout for the adults, and arguably one of the best sunset spots in Abu Dhabi. This open-air Italian lounge looks across the golf greens to the creek, and as the sky turned apricot and plates of silky handmade pasta arrived, there was a rare and welcome sense that we were actually relaxing.
Belgian Café brought the energy. Styled as a vintage 1920s brasserie, it serves authentic Belgian comfort food, shows live sport on the screens and has the kind of lively after-work atmosphere that suits a long, leisurely lunch.
Staying within the Yas Plaza Hotels cluster also means you can easily walk next door for more options. A good example is Stills Restaurant & Bar at Crowne Plaza Yas Island, home to the longest bar in the capital — a sight that is genuinely cinematic when it stretches out in front of you — alongside hearty European dishes, an extensive line-up of international draught beers and a reputation as an Abu Dhabi ladies’ night favourite, annointed by us, of course! It made an ideal nightcap.
Verdict
This is the rare staycation where nobody has to compromise. The suites create proper family space, the included theme park tickets deliver serious value, the dining offers range and the mangroves provide something increasingly precious on Yas Island: calm.
We arrived as four slightly frazzled people and left two days later as a family that had genuinely spent time together. That, really, is the review.
