Inclusion of “Al-Faya” in the World Heritage List: A Major Victory for Our Country

The inclusion of “Al-Faya” in the World Heritage List represents a significant victory for our country and reflects Sharjah‘s steadfast commitment to preserving this human heritage for future generations. Under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Al-Faya site will gain global importance, maintaining its status as one of the cultural landmarks that highlight the rich history of the region. This historic achievement marks a milestone in the record of the United Arab Emirates’ accomplishments, positioning it prominently on the map of human heritage.

A Historic Achievement for Sharjah

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the official ambassador for the nomination file, described the inclusion of “Al-Faya” in the World Heritage List as a “historic achievement.” She noted that this accomplishment embodies Sharjah’s strong commitment to preserving human heritage and presenting it to future generations. This achievement was announced at an official ceremony held in Paris, where the inclusion of Al-Faya as one of the unique cultural sites was celebrated.

The inclusion of “Al-Faya” in the World Heritage List is particularly special, as it was the only Arab nomination considered by the World Heritage Committee in its 47th session. Thus, Al-Faya becomes the second site in the United Arab Emirates to receive this honor, following the cultural sites in Al Ain, which were included in 2011. These additions enhance the country’s status on the global stage as a custodian of cultural heritage and human legacy.

Ongoing Government Commitment

The Permanent Delegate of the United Arab Emirates to UNESCO, Ali Al-Haj Al-Ali, expressed the country’s steadfast commitment to preserving heritage. He pointed out that the inclusion of “Al-Faya” represents a significant step toward enhancing the representation of Arab cultures in the World Heritage Register. He stated, “The World Heritage List is not just a register of sites; it embodies the diverse stories of humanity, reminding us that heritage knows no boundaries, and every culture has something essential to offer.” This approach strengthens the presence of Arab culture in the human narrative and allows the world to appreciate its historical richness.

International Partnership for Heritage Protection

The ceremony gathered a select group of World Heritage Committee members, along with diplomats and international experts, in a collective celebration of this achievement. The milestones that led the file “Cultural Landscape of Prehistoric Times in Al-Faya” to this advanced stage were showcased, reflecting the close cooperation among researchers, experts, and partners who were the cornerstone of the nomination process.

The Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, Issa Youssef, emphasized the importance of continuing international cooperation to protect the heritage of “Al-Faya” and encourage related scientific research. He explained that the site serves as a window into the capabilities of ancient humans to adapt to harsh desert environments.

The inclusion of “Al-Faya” in the World Heritage List is a major victory for the United Arab Emirates and reflects Sharjah’s ongoing commitment to preserving human heritage. This step not only signifies global recognition but also presents an opportunity to enhance international cooperation and participation in protecting cultural and intellectual history.
