University of Al Ain Launches PharmD Program for High School Graduates

In a significant move to enhance the pharmaceutical education landscape in the UAE, Al Ain University has launched a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programme tailored for high school graduates. This initiative aims to cultivate a skilled cohort of pharmacists equipped with clinical knowledge and necessary professional competencies to advance pharmaceutical practices and patient-centric care, aligning with the fast-paced development of the healthcare sector in the Emirates.

Programme Overview

The PharmD programme is offered by the College of Pharmacy at both the main campus in Abu Dhabi’s Mohammed Bin Zayed City and the Al Ain campus. This new offering complements the college’s current academic portfolio, which includes a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics, a Master of Science in Clinical Pharmacy, and a Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Curriculum and Training

Spanning six years and encompassing a total of 214 credit hours, the PharmD programme features a comprehensive curriculum focused on clinical practice and patient care, prioritising evidence-based therapeutic decision-making. Notably, it integrates 40 weeks of clinical training within hospitals during the sixth year, alongside 10 weeks of comprehensive training at community pharmacies and within the pharmaceutical industry. This hands-on experience provides students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in realistic professional environments.

Addressing Healthcare Needs

The introduction of this programme comes in response to the evolving demands of the healthcare sector in the UAE and the expanding roles of pharmacists within the healthcare framework. Emphasis will be placed on pharmaceutical care, safe and effective drug use, and improved medication management and outcomes for patients.

Preparing Future Leaders

The programme aspires to prepare graduates who can work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams, actively contributing to the improvement of healthcare services offered to the community. Al Ain University’s College of Pharmacy provides a learning environment that merges theoretical knowledge with practical application, through specialised academic courses, laboratories, and training facilities. This structure fosters students’ scientific and practical skill development throughout their studies, culminating in clinical and field training opportunities.

Commitment to Educational Excellence

Dr. Amer Qasem, President of Al Ain University, remarked that the implementation of the PharmD programme reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to developing its academic offerings in response to the needs of vital sectors within the UAE. “The healthcare sector is one of the most strategically significant fields experiencing rapid evolution in the UAE. As an educational institution, it is our responsibility to keep pace with these developments by preparing skilled professionals who possess the knowledge and competencies required in the job market,” he stated. He further noted that the PharmD programme strengthens the university’s health-related curriculum, providing students with a pathway that combines quality education with practical and clinical experience.

Holistic Educational Experience

Dr. Mohammed Bustaneddin, Dean of the College of Pharmacy at Al Ain University, highlighted that the PharmD programme is designed to offer a comprehensive educational experience linking pharmaceutical sciences with clinical practice and patient care. “Students will transition gradually from building a strong scientific foundation to applying what they have learned in real healthcare and professional environments,” he explained. He added, “Practical and clinical training is a key focus of the programme; therefore, we have ensured a robust training path that includes community pharmacies, hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industry. Through this programme, we aim to graduate pharmacists who possess scientific proficiency, professional skills, and the ability to meet the demands of modern pharmaceutical practice while working effectively within healthcare systems.”

The PharmD programme opens up new avenues for high school graduates eager to further their studies in pharmacy, preparing them for diverse professional pathways that span clinical pharmacy, digital health, hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry roles, and more, within the modern realm of pharmaceutical practice and pharmaceutical care.
