Federal National Council Mobilizes Efforts to Establish “Year of the Family”

In a move that underscores the importance of family as a fundamental component of community development, the Federal National Council has mobilized its efforts to activate the “Year of the Family” initiative announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This initiative, scheduled for 2026, aims to enhance values of unity and connection within the Emirati community. Through a series of events and initiatives, the council seeks to establish the concept of family as a central element in the national vision for the future.

The Family as a Pillar of Development

Her Excellency Mariam Majid Khalfan Al Thani, the second deputy speaker of the Federal National Council, emphasized that the family represents the “first fortress” in the journey of development. During a dialogue session titled “Union and Family,” Al Thani spoke about the importance of His Highness the President’s follow-up on the national agenda for family growth 2031, noting that this attention reflects the significant importance of this issue. She added that the directives from His Highness serve to “reinforce the goals of the national agenda” and highlight the community’s awareness of the necessity to maintain strong family ties.

Legislative Actions and Future Initiatives

As part of its efforts to establish the “Year of the Family,” Al Thani clarified that the Federal National Council is not merely a legislative and oversight body but also represents the pulse of the community. She indicated that engaging with dialogue councils, such as Dr. Kaldari’s Council, provides an opportunity to listen to citizens’ suggestions, which can later be translated into legislation that serves families and the community. These efforts reflect the concept of genuine national partnership in decision-making.

Enhancing Institutional Values and National Belonging

For her part, Al Thani affirmed that the UAE possesses a unique character, representing a “large council” where leadership meets the people. She considered this tradition a manifestation of the values established by the founding fathers. During the celebrations of the nation’s founding, lessons are drawn from the experience of the union, which enhances values of unity and integration that originated from the larger family. Through this vision, the concept of family is solidified as a foundation contributing to the success of society.

The Distinction of Emirati Women and Their Vital Role

Her Excellency Mariam Al Thani spoke proudly about her experience as the president of the Parliamentary Forum for Women in the Mediterranean Parliament. She asserted that the experience of empowering women in the UAE serves as a model to be emulated, as women represent a significant percentage in the Federal National Council. She noted that this leadership reflects the belief of the leadership in the role of women as active partners in building and decision-making.

At the end of the session, Her Excellency Al Thani expressed her appreciation for the sacrifices of the martyrs of the UAE, who exemplify loyalty and belonging. The enhancement of values of sacrifice through the “Year of the Family 2026” initiative works towards building a prosperous future for generations to come.

Her Excellency Mariam Majid Khalfan Al Thani demonstrated that the Federal National Council does not limit its efforts to superficial initiatives; rather, it aims to build an integrated community, inspired by the rich legacy of the union, affirming that establishing the “Year of the Family” is a comprehensive national project seeking to achieve stability and prosperity for the Emirati people.
