Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State and candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, has emphasised that the international organisation is at a pivotal juncture that demands generational change and effective diplomacy. She stressed that the next leadership must strive to make a genuine impact on the lives of the most vulnerable populations around the globe.
A Call for Change and Impact
In a brief video message shared on the social media platform X, Nusseibeh made her statements following congratulations on her candidacy, amidst months of speculation regarding her entry into the race. Responding to a question about how she intends to handle objections to her nomination, Nusseibeh remarked, “I think we are at a critical stage for the United Nations. It is time for generational change, a time for effective diplomacy.”
Commitment to Those in Need
Nusseibeh highlighted the necessity for a candidate who is focused on “making an impact for those who need it most on the ground,” reiterating, “I place myself in service of this endeavour.” Her commitment reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the global community and the urgent need for leadership that resonates with those who are often overlooked.
Acknowledging Speculation
During the conversation, a journalist pointed out that speculation about her candidacy had lasted for approximately six months. In response, Nusseibeh humorously noted that it might have been even longer, describing the electoral race as “interesting.”
As Nusseibeh navigates this critical moment for the United Nations, her vision of impactful and effective diplomacy could reshape the trajectory of the organisation, potentially bringing new hope to those who need it most.
