In a significant development, the United Arab Emirates has announced the successful containment of an oil spill from a tanker following an incident in its territorial waters. The Emirati authorities are actively engaged in efforts to manage and remediate the environmental impacts along affected coastal areas.

Coordination Efforts Underway

According to the official Emirates News Agency (WAM), the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is continuing its collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, along with the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and relevant federal and local agencies. These efforts focus on the secure handling of the oil tanker “GEM NO. 2” after it was involved in an incident at sea, with measures being taken to mitigate any associated risks and ensure maritime safety.

Technical Assessments and Monitoring

The ministry reported that specialised technical teams are engaged in repair work on the damaged vessel, which includes restoring some operational systems and assessing the integrity of the ship’s structure to determine the safest approach for its management. According to the latest assessments, no new oil leaks have been detected from the tanker.

Environmental Response Initiatives

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has confirmed that its teams are addressing the marine contamination caused by the oil spill, in continuous coordination with relevant authorities at both federal and local levels. Field surveys, monitoring, and clean-up operations are ongoing in the coastal areas affected by the pollution.

The ministry underscored that public safety remains the highest priority. Recent satellite imagery indicates that the oil slick is primarily located off the coast of Umm Al-Quwain, extending partially towards coastal regions in Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Sharjah. Notably, there is a significant decrease in the observed level of pollution, thanks to ongoing containment and remediation efforts that have successfully halted the spill from its source.

Contingency Measures and Public Safety

Efforts to contain and address the spill rely heavily on mechanical mitigation methods, supplemented by the use of chemical dispersants that adhere to international standards and established guidelines, all coordinated with relevant bodies. As a precaution, certain beaches and coastal areas are temporarily closed. This decision is not indicative of widespread contamination across all affected locations; rather, it reflects a commitment to community and marine environmental safety, permitting space for continued survey and remediation work.

Furthermore, the Union Water and Electricity Company has assured the public of the safety of drinking water, indicating that precautionary measures are being taken to monitor the quality of sea waters and the treated water supply, with no impact on consumer supplies noted.

Details of the Incident Awaiting Clarification

Authorities have not disclosed specific details concerning the nature or causes of the incident involving the tanker. The statement remains limited to acknowledging that the vessel encountered an incident in the UAE’s waters, without revealing the timing of the occurrence.

Earlier on 23 October, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment had announced the temporary closure of all beaches in Umm Al-Quwain along with affected coastal areas due to detected marine contamination from the oil spill.
