The UAE Showcases Its Efforts to Support People of Determination at “COSP18” Conference
As part of its unwavering commitment to the rights of people of determination, the United Arab Emirates presented a comprehensive overview of its efforts to support this group during the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities “COSP18,” held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from June 10 to 12. The UAE delegation was led by Sara bint Mohammed Al Suhail, Minister of Community Development, who emphasized the importance of empowering people of determination and supporting them with appropriate initiatives.
Commitment to Empowerment and Inclusivity
During the national statement presented by the UAE at the discussions, the minister conveyed a clear message regarding the country’s commitment to supporting and empowering people of determination, highlighting their rights to equal opportunities and active participation in community development. She stated, “In the UAE, we believe that people with disabilities, whom we refer to as ‘people of determination,’ are partners in building the nation… From this perspective, the state has adopted a comprehensive approach to building a society that embraces all its members based on the values of tolerance and justice.”
Notable Achievements Across Various Sectors
The statement also addressed a range of UAE achievements in supporting people of determination. Through six key pillars—healthcare, education, employment, social protection, accessibility, and community participation—significant progress has been made. These successes are attributed to a strong legislative framework, including Federal Law No. 29 of 2006, along with local strategies such as the Abu Dhabi and Dubai strategies for the integration of people of determination.
Inclusive educational environments have been developed, including schools and early intervention programs, with the establishment of over 35 government centers specializing in the needs of people of determination, in addition to licensing more than 46 private centers. In the employment sector, the UAE is enhancing inclusive work environments in both the public and private sectors, working on developing a supportive infrastructure that includes transportation and public facilities.
Advancements in Healthcare and International Events
In the healthcare sector, the UAE provides comprehensive services that include therapy, rehabilitation, and psychological support, along with training programs that enhance the independence of people of determination, such as life skills and supported living options. Sara bint Mohammed Al Suhail also highlighted the country’s commitment through hosting several major international events, such as the International Rehabilitation Conference 2024 and the Special Olympics World Games 2019.
Collaboration Between the UAE Government and Civil Society Organizations
The UAE delegation at the conference included representatives from the Ministry of Community Development and the Executive Council of Dubai, as well as various entities such as the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi and the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination. This formation embodies the collaboration between different governmental and non-governmental organizations to enhance comprehensive support for people of determination.
On the sidelines of the conference, the UAE hosted the “Forum” event, which served as a cultural and diplomatic platform to foster dialogue among all stakeholders. This participation further demonstrates the UAE’s leading role in shaping policies that support people of determination at both regional and international levels.
Through all these efforts, the UAE highlights its ongoing commitment to empowering people of determination and supporting their rights, affirming the importance of inclusivity and empowerment in achieving sustainable community development.
