The United Arab Emirates is advancing towards a sustainable agricultural future by launching a quality AI system that supports the enhancement of global agricultural development. This initiative aims to provide innovative solutions that help agricultural communities adapt to climate changes, reflecting the country’s commitment to addressing global challenges in food security and improving the lives of farmers.
Strategic Partnership with the Gates Foundation
During the Conference of the Parties (COP28), the UAE announced the launch of an AI system that serves as a global platform to support the agricultural sector worldwide. This initiative is part of a valuable partnership with the Gates Foundation, with a budget of $200 million allocated to support global agricultural development efforts. The launch ceremony featured H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Al Mehairi, Head of International Affairs at the Presidential Court, and Bill Gates, Head of the Gates Foundation, who presented an interactive discussion on the core pillars of the system at the “UAE-Gates Partnership Exhibition.”
Key Initiatives Contributing to Agricultural Improvement
The system relies on three main initiatives: the AI Center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the Institute of Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI), and the AgriLLM model, along with the AIM for Scale initiative. H.E. Mariam Al Mehairi stated that these initiatives aim to connect the UAE’s national capabilities with global partners to transform knowledge and research into effective solutions for agricultural challenges.
Details of the Four Initiatives
The AI Center of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) serves as a global collaboration platform based in Abu Dhabi. The center aims to transform agriculture through digital innovation, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s commitment to enhancing its position as a leading hub in agricultural AI. Meanwhile, the Institute of Agriculture and Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) focuses on providing advisory tools and training programs to improve the lives of 43 million smallholder farmers.
The AgriLLM model is an open-source language model designed to provide intelligent solutions for farmers, trained on a wide range of agricultural data. Additionally, the AIM for Scale initiative contributes by offering AI-supported weather forecasts that help farmers prepare for climate changes.
Future Prospects and Enhancing Food Security
This system represents a model of technological innovation in the agricultural sector, enabling the country to explore new partnerships and enhance food security. Bill Gates emphasized the importance of accessing practical, data-driven solutions to assist farmers in facing climate challenges, contributing to greater stability for agricultural communities around the world.
This initiative stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to promoting global agricultural development through investment in scientific research and technology, ensuring that agricultural communities are well-prepared to tackle future challenges efficiently and effectively.
