In light of the ongoing escalation in the region, the United Arab Emirates has firmly rejected Iranian characterizations regarding attacks on regional countries, emphasizing that it categorically denies Iran‘s description of its attacks as “retaliatory.” This stance reflects the country’s commitment to its inherent right to self-defense and demonstrates its determination to protect its sovereignty and security.
UAE’s Response to Iranian Escalation
The UAE has expressed its serious rejection of any justifications issued by the Iranian government concerning its aggressive escalation, considering these justifications to be mere attempts to mislead the international community and justify the treacherous and unlawful assaults on the UAE and regional countries. His Excellency Jamal Al-Musharakh, the UAE’s permanent representative to the United Nations, stated during a panel discussion in Geneva that targeting civilians and civilian facilities constitutes a blatant violation of the principles of international humanitarian law and human rights.
International Calls to Stop Iranian Attacks
His Excellency noted that the ongoing Iranian attacks against the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries over the past 17 days have been met with strong condemnation from the international community. A historic UN Security Council resolution, numbered 2817 and co-sponsored by 136 nations, has called for an immediate cessation of these attacks by Iran. This resolution clarifies that such actions are violations of international law and pose a threat to international peace and security, reflecting the international community’s intolerance for assaults on the sovereignty of nations.
Rejection of Iranian Characterizations
His Excellency firmly asserted that the UAE rejects Iran’s characterization of its attacks as “retaliatory,” pointing out that this description lacks any legal or factual basis. He explained that any attempts to justify these assaults carry significant risks, contradicting the principles of the international system based on respect for the sovereignty of nations. He also emphasized that these attacks reflect unwarranted aggression and violate the efforts of the international community to maintain international peace and security.
Humanitarian and Economic Consequences
Many lives have been affected by the Iranian attacks, which have resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 142 others. These attacks pose a serious security threat to residents and citizens, and they have negative repercussions on regional stability, international navigation security, and global supply chains. In this context, His Excellency Al-Musharakh highlighted the UAE’s right to take all necessary measures to defend itself and ensure the safety of its citizens and residents.
In conclusion, the UAE continues to affirm its commitment to its inherent right to self-defense, safeguarding all of its rights in accordance with international law and Article 51 of the UN Charter. It is essential for the Human Rights Council to uphold its responsibilities in documenting and characterizing violations in line with reality and the provisions of international law.
