In a significant humanitarian effort, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Cyprus have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at delivering life-saving aid to civilians in Gaza. This joint Emirati-Cypriot initiative highlights the commitment of both nations to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis faced by many in the region, ensuring that assistance reaches those in need safely and effectively.
Commitment to Humanitarian Assistance
The UAE and Cyprus reaffirmed their dedication to minimizing civilian suffering by ensuring a steady flow of humanitarian aid. This initiative aims to utilize all available and feasible routes, including the newly established maritime corridor known as “Amaltheia,” which connects Cyprus to Gaza. Launched in March 2024, this corridor complements existing international efforts to deliver aid by land, air, and sea.
Operational Coordination and Support
Through close operational coordination with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and the World Central Kitchen (WCK), the UAE and Cyprus are leveraging Security Council Resolution 2720, which facilitates the monitoring and verification of aid delivery. The two countries have taken proactive measures by sending 1,200 tons of humanitarian supplies via the Ashdod port, supported by the UAE’s Amaltheia Fund.
Focus on Essential Needs
This vital humanitarian contribution, which also involves assistance from partner nations and international humanitarian organizations, focuses primarily on providing food supplies, particularly for children. Key items include wheat flour and other basic necessities, essential for meeting the urgent needs of the most vulnerable populations in Gaza.
