The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the violations committed against civilians in Sudan. This statement underscores the urgent need for improved protection measures and humanitarian assistance for affected populations. Amid ongoing conflicts and human rights abuses, the UAE demands accountability and supportive action on a global scale.
Calls for Civilian Protection
Jamal Al-Musharakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, emphasized the critical need to ensure the safety of civilians and unimpeded access to aid in Sudan. He remarked, “The UAE has been closely monitoring reports from the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the international mission investigating the facts, which detail the ongoing and horrific atrocities affecting the Sudanese people.” This statement highlights the UAE’s unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of civilians caught in the conflict.
Denouncing Atrocities
Al-Musharakh also declared, “We firmly condemn all violations against civilians perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher, particularly those committed by both warring factions throughout Sudan.” He elaborated on the alarming patterns of sexual violence inflicted by both sides, expressing grave concern over the situation. “We will continue to demand an immediate cessation of these violations and urge the international community to take decisive measures to protect women and girls in Sudan.” The UAE’s focus on gender-based violence highlights a critical aspect of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
Humanitarian Assistance and Aid Commitments
Furthermore, Al-Musharakh emphasized the importance of ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches all areas of Sudan swiftly and without barriers. Since the onset of the civil war, the UAE has positioned itself as the second-largest donor of humanitarian assistance, demonstrating its commitment to supporting afflicted populations in Sudan. He noted, “The Quad efforts, led by the United States, alongside the peace plan for Sudan, are essential for paving the way toward a transitional process free from the warring factions and extremist groups, aligning with the aspirations of the Sudanese people for an independent civilian government.”
Response to Misinformation
The UAE also condemned attempts by the Sudanese Armed Forces to disseminate unfounded allegations. Khalifa Al-Mazrouei, an advisor in the UAE’s permanent mission in Geneva, asserted that the military’s actions reveal an attempt to distract from their primary responsibility of protecting civilians and to evade accountability regarding documented war crimes. “These attempts only serve to shift the conversation away from the real issues at hand,” he stated, reinforcing the UAE’s stance on ensuring accountability and justice amidst the turmoil.
