The UAE Becomes the Fifth Country to Reach Mars, with 42% of “Hope Probe” Research Papers Authored by Emiratis
In a significant achievement that highlights the UAE’s contributions to space exploration, the country has become the fifth in the world to reach Mars, thanks to the “Hope Probe” project. This mission not only showcased the UAE’s technical capabilities but also revealed the role of Emirati researchers, who contributed over 42% of the scientific papers related to the mission, reflecting a high level of local innovation and knowledge.
Unprecedented Achievements
Mohsen Al Awadhi, Director of the Space Missions Department, confirmed that the UAE’s arrival at Mars reflects its distinguished position in the global space exploration landscape. He explained that the “Hope Probe” represents a qualitative achievement, as it succeeded on its first attempt, establishing it as a leading international scientific platform for studying the Red Planet.
Figures Reflecting Emirati Scientific Presence
During a press conference showcasing updates on the “Hope Probe” mission, Al Awadhi noted that 42% of the published scientific papers in this field came from Emirati researchers, while 45% originated from the United States and 13% from other countries such as China, France, Spain, and Japan. This figure indicates the steady and remarkable growth of the Emirati scientific presence in space sciences.
Data Exceeding Expectations
The initial goal of the mission was to collect one terabyte of data over one Martian year, but the “Hope Probe” managed to gather more than ten times that amount, demonstrating the efficiency of its engineering design and the precision of its scientific planning. Al Awadhi confirmed that the probe’s data has contributed to the publication of over 35 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals in collaboration with more than 250 researchers and scientists from around the globe.
A Qualitative Leap in Knowledge Production
These figures signify the UAE’s transition from a capacity-building phase to a stage of knowledge production and competition in global research. Al Awadhi emphasizes that the “Hope Probe” is not merely a national achievement but an open scientific platform that has benefited researchers and academic institutions worldwide, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to enhancing knowledge and innovation in space.
