UAE Aviation Sector Set for Trillion Dirham Expansion by 2045

In a recent interview with الاتحاد, Saif Al Suwaidi, the Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority, revealed that the UAE’s aviation sector is set to receive over a trillion dirhams in future investments until 2045. This influx is anticipated alongside the existing cumulative investment surpassing a trillion dirhams by 2025. This significant financial commitment underscores the UAE’s ambition to strengthen its position as a global aviation hub, expecting passenger counts to soar to over 155 million by 2025.

Growth Amid Global Challenges

Al Suwaidi emphasized that this growth projection occurs despite geopolitical and economic challenges worldwide. The aviation sector’s robust operational strength serves as a testament to the UAE’s enduring appeal as a pivotal global hub for travel and commerce. In 2024, the number of travelers through UAE airports exceeded 147.8 million, which speaks volumes about the country’s resilient infrastructure and effective operational policies. Al Suwaidi stated, “This growth trend is also based on monthly averages and the first ten months of 2025, during which the nation welcomed over 128 million travelers.”

Strategic Infrastructure Investments

The anticipated future investments in the aviation sector are geared toward enhancing airport infrastructure, aiming to increase the total capacity of the nation’s airports to over 160 million passengers annually, with projections rising to 250 million after major expansions. Notably, the development of Al Maktoum International Airport is set to transform it into the world’s largest airport in terms of operational capacity, designed to accommodate over 260 million passengers. Additionally, the expansion and modernization of Abu Dhabi International Airport are crucial for catering to the growing demand for regional and international travel.

Economic Contributions and Job Creation

Al Suwaidi detailed how the aviation sector not only contributes significantly to the economy but also enhances employment opportunities across various supporting sectors like hospitality and logistics, supporting over 992,000 jobs and accounting for approximately 18.2% of the GDP. He noted, “Every additional traveler boosts tourism and commercial revenues, contributing to the overall vitality of the economy.” Furthermore, the integration of advanced technologies and smart systems plays a critical role in streamlining airport operations, enhancing passenger experiences while increasing operational efficiency.

Global Leadership and Innovation

Amidst these developments, Al Suwaidi pointed out that the UAE secured a position on the ICAO Council for the 2025-2028 term, reinforcing its international influence in shaping the future of civil aviation. He highlighted that the significance of this role extends beyond mere representation; it positions the UAE at the forefront of pivotal discussions on issues such as sustainable aviation fuel and climate financing for aviation. “Maintaining this seat allows us to have a direct impact on global governance transformations, particularly in light of mounting climatic challenges and cybersecurity demands,” he added.

With future investments projected to exceed a trillion dirhams in the UAE’s aviation sector by 2045, the nation’s commitment not only showcases operational resilience but also solidifies its standing as a strategic aviation hub internationally. Al Suwaidi’s insights underscore a continuous trajectory of growth, highlighting the ongoing investments and strategic initiatives that position the UAE firmly in the global aviation landscape.
