The strategic partnership between the UAE and South Korea exemplifies a model for bilateral relations that have evolved over more than 45 years. The visit of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to the UAE marks a significant step toward enhancing this partnership, which aims for development and prosperity for both nations. The UAE and South Korea engage in various areas, including economy, security, and cultural cooperation, leading to positive outcomes that benefit both parties.
History of UAE-South Korea Relations
Relations between the UAE and South Korea were established over four decades ago, when the UAE became one of the first countries in the Middle East to form a special strategic partnership with South Korea. This relationship has gained particular significance, representing a qualitative leap in areas such as scientific and economic cooperation, as well as defense and healthcare.
Economic and Investment Cooperation
The economic relations between the two countries are witnessing remarkable growth, with the total value of non-oil trade between the UAE and South Korea reaching $6.6 billion in 2024, marking an increase of 11.4% compared to 2023. Furthermore, this cooperation has achieved notable milestones through the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to increase the value of non-oil trade to over four trillion dirhams by 2031. Once this agreement comes into effect, businesses in both countries will benefit from the elimination of most tariffs and the removal of trade barriers in several sectors.
Joint Development Projects
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant represents a prominent example of cooperation between the UAE and South Korea. This project not only showcases the two countries’ ability to collaborate on clean energy but is also the first nuclear power plant constructed by South Korea abroad. In this context, the number of projects in areas such as tourism and aviation is increasing, with over 200,000 South Korean tourists visiting the UAE annually.
Cultural Cooperation and Health Sciences
Both countries are keen to enhance cultural relations through initiatives such as the opening of the Korean Cultural Center in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, collaboration is underway in the field of medical education through joint agreements that contribute to improving healthcare quality. Recently, Dubai witnessed the groundbreaking of a new hospital in partnership with an Asian medical company, providing further evidence of this collaboration.
Through this strategic partnership, the UAE and South Korea aim to achieve development and prosperity for their peoples, making it a leading model for international relations based on mutual cooperation and sustainable growth.
