UAE Pledges $15 Million to Alleviate Sudan Refugee Crisis

In a significant move to aid humanitarian efforts, the UAE has allocated $15 million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to respond to the crisis in Sudan. This funding was announced during a pledging conference for the UN agency, aimed at launching the Global Humanitarian Appeal for 2026. The UAE’s commitment underscores its ongoing support for communities affected by conflict and instability, reflecting the nation’s dedication to tackling pressing global challenges.

Commitment to Humanitarian Support

The United Arab Emirates has earmarked a substantial amount of $15 million for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to bolster humanitarian response initiatives in Sudan and neighboring countries. This contribution reinforces the UAE’s unwavering commitment to assist communities impacted by ongoing conflicts and crises. Jamal Al-Musharrekh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, highlighted the necessity for global solidarity and collective responsibility in addressing the unprecedented levels of displacement caused by wars, persecution, and climate-related issues.

Addressing Humanitarian Crises

During the press conference, Al-Musharrekh drew attention to ongoing humanitarian emergencies in regions including South Sudan, Sudan, the Sahel, Myanmar, and Ukraine. These crises continue to force vast numbers of families to flee both within their countries and across borders. He stressed that internal displacement in areas such as the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa is worsening due to climate pressures and violence, leading to escalating humanitarian needs. The vulnerable positions of women, children, and at-risk populations facing increasing protection challenges were also highlighted as critical areas requiring targeted intervention.

Focus on Humanitarian Principles

Al-Musharrekh emphasized the UAE’s dedication to providing principle-based aid through the Emirates International Aid Agency, working closely with UNHCR and its partners. This effort aims to support host communities while ensuring that displaced individuals have access to essential services. “Refugees and internally displaced persons are individuals with dignity and have the right to live in safety and hope,” he remarked, reiterating the agency’s philosophy of dignity and safety for all. He pointed out that forward-looking funding and equitable burden-sharing are crucial for ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches those in need safely, sustainably, and without barriers.

Contributions and Future Initiatives

With this latest commitment, the UAE’s $15 million allocation to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees for the crisis in Sudan reinforces its long-term commitment to enhancing protection and assistance programs for those affected by the crisis. This funding is set to play a significant role in fostering stability and resilience in the region. Additionally, it reflects the UAE’s steadfast approach to working collaboratively with regional and international partners, especially in Africa, to ensure sustainable development and stability for Sudan’s people. Since the onset of conflict in 2023, the UAE’s humanitarian assistance has surpassed $784 million, making it the second-largest donor to Sudan after the United States.

In light of these developments, the annual UNHCR pledging conference remains a vital platform where countries gather at the Palais des Nations in Geneva to announce their voluntary contributions. As the UAE continues to strengthen its humanitarian initiatives, it remains committed to advocating for the rights and needs of the vulnerable, embodying the deep-rooted values of human solidarity shared by its leadership and people.
