In a world characterized by rapid change and technological advancement, the love of reading and the idea of books as “good companions” serve as fundamental pillars in shaping an enlightened generation. The UAE reflects a clear vision for the future through initiatives that promote a culture of reading and enhance the love of books among youth, despite the challenges posed by modern technology. These efforts align with the leadership’s commitment to rebuilding the relationship of new generations with books, making reading a sustainable habit.
The UAE and Embracing Reading
While some voices describe our region as an “Ummah that reads not,” the UAE proves otherwise through its tangible efforts to encourage reading in an organized and effective manner. Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, initiatives have been launched based on careful planning aimed at instilling a love of reading in new generations. These steps reinforce the notion that a book is “the best companion,” despite the challenges of the digital age.
The Arab Reading Challenge
The “Arab Reading Challenge” initiative is one of the most prominent examples of this commitment, attracting the participation of 810,000 students from 1,380 Emirati schools in its ninth edition. This competition is not merely an event; it contributes to shaping students’ personalities and enhancing their desire for knowledge. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid praised the overcoming of challenges, stating, “I am proud of the participation of Emirati students… I am happy with the new generation’s enthusiasm for reading.” This passion reflects not only individual achievements but also encompasses the entire Emirati culture.
The Importance of Supporting Knowledge and Culture
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized the fundamental role of reading in shaping generations, noting that “the UAE supports all talents and cultural and knowledge initiatives through its belief that reading is a vital source for building a person.” This vision enhances the importance of the Arabic language, contributing to refining national identity while embracing modern knowledge. Thanks to these initiatives, a balance is achieved between preserving heritage and adopting contemporary knowledge.
A Bright Future with Reading
Efforts continue to instill a love of reading as a key component of the character of future generations, contributing to the development of a comprehensive cultural space. This reflects the UAE’s vision for advancing society and providing a generation capable of facing future challenges. Emphasizing the status of books and “good companions” reinforces the idea that reading is not merely a hobby; it is the foundation for building a bright future that thrives on open and creative thinking.
