As the sun sets today, the final remnants of summer officially come to a close, according to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences.
Seasonal Changes and Meteorological Definitions
In a statement to “Emirates Today,” Al Jarwan explained that the classification of seasons from a meteorological perspective is based on average temperatures throughout the year. This year, autumn will commence at the start of September, winter will begin in December, and spring will follow in March, while summer commenced in June. Such categorisation facilitates the calculation of averages based on annual data observed in many countries worldwide.
A Contrast with Astronomical Seasons
Al Jarwan also clarified that this meteorological classification differs from astronomical seasons, which are determined by the sun’s position relative to the Earth. According to this framework, autumn officially begins on 23 September, winter starts on 22 December, spring on 21 March, and summer on 21 July.
As the UAE transitions into autumn, residents can expect a shift in temperatures and weather patterns, marking the end of an era characterized by heat and longer daylight hours.
