Sharjah Initiative Strengthens Cultural Preservation Throughout the UAE

In a significant stride towards preserving the rich cultural heritage of the United Arab Emirates, the Sharjah Institute for Heritage launched its first workshop as part of the Electronic Gateway Project for Arab Heritage. Titled “Documenting Intangible Cultural Heritage (UAE Heritage),” this workshop will run for two days and features a distinguished group of experts and researchers. Under the supervision of heritage expert Dr. Mustafa Gad and in the presence of Dr. Abdulaziz Al Muslim, head of the institute, the event aims to equip researchers with systematic methodologies for documenting intangible cultural elements in the UAE, reinforcing the foundations of Emirati heritage documentation.

Empowering Researchers

The workshop is designed to train researchers on effective methodologies for documenting intangible cultural heritage, utilizing the vast resources available at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage and the Arab Heritage Center. Dr. Abdulaziz Al Muslim emphasized that the project, a dream for researchers over several decades, has now become a reality thanks to the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. His commitment to preserving Arab heritage has fostered an institutional environment conducive to this pioneering initiative.

Transitioning to a Digital Future

Dr. Al Muslim remarked that the workshop signifies more than just a theoretical exercise; it is a tangible step toward transforming the heritage archive into an interactive digital gateway. This platform will provide researchers and enthusiasts from across the Arab world with modern tools to document heritage according to rigorous scientific standards. The workshop also aims to enhance the capabilities of professionals in the field and empower them to contribute to a collaborative Arab project that elevates cultural identity and ensures its sustainability for future generations.

Focus on Practical Application

Dr. Mustafa Gad highlighted that this workshop is part of the preparatory efforts for launching the Electronic Gateway for Arab Heritage. It emphasizes the first stage of documenting heritage content and aims to train participants on applying scientific documentation principles to local materials. As part of a series of planning and procedural workshops, this initiative paves the way for the electronic gateway, which is dedicated to gathering, classifying, and showcasing intangible cultural heritage across the Arab world.

A Unified Approach to Heritage Documentation

The electronic gateway is envisioned as a specialized digital platform aimed at unifying efforts and standards for heritage documentation. It will offer interactive tools for researchers and cultural institutions focused on the preservation and enhancement of heritage. This initiative is crucial for promoting a cohesive framework for documenting the unique elements of Emirati culture, further solidifying the role of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage in fostering national identity and cultural continuity.
