Sharjah Unveils Ambitious Plan for Innovative Creative Quarter

Sharjah has officially unveiled plans for the Creative Quarter development, a pioneering initiative designed to foster a vibrant ecosystem for businesses in fashion, jewellery, product design, and handicrafts. This innovative project is poised to establish Sharjah as a leading hub for creative industries, attracting talent and investment while promoting regional craftsmanship.

Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued an Emiri Decree establishing and organising the Sharjah Creative Quarter (SCQ). This decree marks a significant milestone in the emirate’s commitment to nurturing creative talent and supporting local businesses.

As outlined in the decree, the Sharjah Creative Quarter is set to operate as a dedicated centre for innovation, equipped with the legal authority and financial independence to achieve its objectives effectively. This development not only highlights Sharjah’s ambition to enhance its cultural landscape but also aims to create a thriving community for creatives.

Objectives of the Sharjah Creative Quarter

Fully owned by the Sharjah government, the SCQ is committed to empowering creative industries and talents across various design disciplines. It will be headquartered in University City, Sharjah, with the potential to expand its influence to other areas within the emirate at the Ruler’s discretion. This strategic location underscores Sharjah’s focus on becoming a leading destination for creativity and innovation.

The SCQ will collaborate with designated government and private entities, fostering relationships that advance its mission. Among its key objectives are:

  • Create a hub for talents and professionals in fashion, jewellery, product design, and handicrafts.
  • Attract leading regional brands while promoting modern design practices.
  • Provide manufacturing spaces and cultural hubs to support creatives and engage visitors.
  • Showcase and celebrate innovative design brands and contemporary fashion in the region.

Operational Framework of the SCQ

The Sharjah Creative Quarter will have a clear mandate to partner with local, regional, and international organisations within the design sector. This initiative aims to offer facilities and services that attract prominent brands and promote design innovation throughout the region.

Additionally, the SCQ will develop joint programs among its associated entities, engaging designers, artisans, and manufacturers in relevant fields. It will seek technical and administrative support from specialised local authorities to enhance its operational capabilities.

Organising and participating in exhibitions, workshops, and events will be central to the SCQ’s agenda. Furthermore, the body will form contracts, agreements, and partnerships with relevant institutions, all subject to approval, ensuring a collaborative approach to achieving its objectives.

Leadership and Governance

The SCQ will be led by a Head, appointed through an Emiri Decree, responsible for overseeing its strategic direction. Daily operations will be managed by a Director appointed by the Head, who will ensure the smooth functioning of the quarter with adequate staff support.

The responsibilities of the Director, as defined by the Head, will include navigating the operational and administrative aspects of the SCQ. The decree comprehensively outlines financial resources, fee exemptions, executive decisions, and procedures for implementation, thus providing a robust framework for the successful launch of the Sharjah Creative Quarter.
