New Seaweed Textile Debuts at Misk Forum

The Fashion Commission has unveiled an exciting advancement in sustainable textiles with the introduction of the Red Sea seaweed textile innovation at the Misk Global Forum. This pioneering bio-textile, derived from marine algae found in the Red Sea, marks a significant milestone in the push for an eco-friendly fashion industry.

A Sustainable Initiative

The sustainable material was created at The Lab, the Fashion Commission’s product development studio, and signifies a crucial step toward establishing a next-generation sustainable fashion ecosystem in Saudi Arabia. This initiative was revealed during the panel discussion titled “Fabric of the Future: Red Sea Seaweed Textile,” which included industry leaders such as Burak Çakmak, CEO of the Fashion Commission, Fiona Symes, COO of KAUST Beacon Development (KBD), and Regina Polanco, CEO of PYRATEX. The discussion delved into the scientific basis and development processes of the innovative material, highlighting its role in shaping the future of fashion.

Collaborative Development

In partnership with KAUST and PYRATEX, the Red Sea seaweed textile fuses marine research, responsible resource utilization, and cutting-edge textile manufacturing. KBD conducted the survey and harvesting of Red Sea algae while ensuring environmental safeguarding and preservation of bioactive qualities. This biomass serves as the foundation for high-quality, traceable, bio-based fibers that align seamlessly with Saudi Arabia’s sustainability objectives.

Voices from the Forefront

“Launching this material marks a defining moment in our journey to build a future-ready sustainable fashion ecosystem,” commented Burak Çakmak. “By transforming a local natural resource into a fully traceable, sustainable textile, we demonstrate the power of science, creativity, and industry working together.”

Fiona Symes also remarked, “By researching the biochemical properties of Red Sea seaweed, we integrated local algae species into an innovative blended yarn. Collaborating with PYRATEX and the Fashion Commission has allowed us to turn a local natural resource into a creative and viable textile ingredient.”

Creating Locally Made Fashion

Utilizing PYRATEX technology, the seaweed biomass was blended with Lyocell and organic cotton, resulting in a fabric that is natural, skin-friendly, and entirely traceable. This unique material was subsequently transformed into garments at The Lab, showcasing the potential to manufacture sustainable, locally produced fashion in Saudi Arabia.

This Red Sea seaweed textile innovation reinforces the Fashion Commission’s mission to drive the evolution of sustainable materials, merging science with creativity to shape the future of fashion both in the Kingdom and on a global scale.
