Sharjah Ruler Launches Cutting-Edge Resource for Historical Dictionary Research

During the opening of the second international conference on the Arabic language — themed “Artificial Intelligence in the Service of the Arabic Language: Creativity, Education, and Research” — numerous initiatives to strengthen the Arabic language were highlighted. This event not only showcases the commitment of Sharjah’s leadership to linguistic heritage but also emphasizes the vital role of AI in educational and research frameworks.

Conference Overview

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, attended the conference held at the Razzi Hall in the Medical Colleges Complex of the University of Sharjah. Accompanied by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmad bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, the event gathered numerous scholars and participants to discuss the importance of artificial intelligence in enhancing the Arabic language.

Remarks on the Arabic Language

In his opening speech, Dr. Issam Eddin Ajami, the Director of the University of Sharjah, addressed the beauty and resilience of the Arabic language, stating, “In you lies the book from which the verses have descended, elevating knowledge and robust in its essence.” His words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the enduring nature of the Arabic language amidst modern challenges.

Dr. Ajami further noted the efforts of the Ruler of Sharjah in fostering a comprehensive approach to the Arabic language, expressing gratitude on behalf of Arabic: “I am Arabic; I come to offer thanks to those who have served the word with sincerity and intention.” This sentiment encapsulates the collective commitment to preserving Arabic in a rapidly evolving world.

The Role of AI in Preserving the Arabic Language

In a keynote address, Dr. Mohamed Ahmad Al-Qudat, Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Jordan, discussed the significance of digital smart applications and artificial intelligence in efforts to safeguard the Arabic language. He highlighted how AI can facilitate access to Arab literary and scientific heritage, ensuring its accessibility for readers and learners alike.

Launch of the Smart Researcher

During the ceremony, His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah officially launched the “Smart Researcher in the Historical Dictionary,” developed by the Sharjah Academy of the Arabic Language. This innovative application, showcased to the audience, aims to provide users with unique features and insights, making it easier than ever to access information regarding the Arabic language’s historical context.

As the program concluded, His Highness recognized the winners of the Sharjah International Award for the Best AI Application in Service of the Arabic Language. First place was awarded to “Arabic Grammar Rules,” second place to “Al Anis,” and third place to “Pronunciation.” The Ruler also honored the sponsors and partners of the conference, further underscoring the collaborative effort in promoting the Arabic language.
