The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority has recently garnered recognition by winning the UAE Ideas Award in the Environmental and Green Applications category for its innovative project, the Lighting of the Palm Oasis. A Step Towards Sustainability
The Lighting of the Palm Oasis project involves the installation of 251 lighting poles, each standing 8 meters high and inspired by the shape of the palm tree. These structures are equipped with state-of-the-art lighting technologies that enhance the aesthetic appeal of the oasis while prioritizing energy efficiency. This project embodies the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who emphasizes sustainable development and environmental preservation.

During the annual awards ceremony organized by the Dubai Quality Group, the authority received a trophy in recognition of its innovative approach. The event, held in the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai’s Civil Aviation Authority, and Dr. Hazaa Khallafan Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Dubai Quality Group, celebrated achievements from various UAE and Gulf entities. This accolade underscores the hard work and creativity behind the Lighting of the Palm Oasis project.

Dr. Engineer Hassan Al Zarouni, Director of the Electricity Distribution Department, elaborated on the project’s innovative design, which merges technical efficiency with cultural aesthetics. The poles mimic the fronds of the palm tree, blending seamlessly into the natural landscape. The use of energy-saving lighting and a smart control system not only enhances operational flexibility but also contributes to sustainability and lower operational costs, strengthening Sharjah’s visual identity.

Engineer Shema Al Ramshi from the Electricity Distribution Department highlighted that the design serves as a comprehensive model that reflects both the environmental and cultural identity of the UAE. With intricate details inspired by Islamic patterns, the lighting poles are designed to be both functional and an artistic element of the landscape, enhancing the overall ambiance.
