In a significant move towards enhancing bilateral trade and investment, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry engaged in discussions with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in the UAE. This meeting, held at the Sharjah Chamber headquarters, underscored the importance of economic collaboration between the two parties and aimed at exploring opportunities in promising sectors, building on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Sharjah Chamber and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Abdullah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber, hosted the Bangladeshi Ambassador to the UAE, Tariq Ahmed, along with a delegation from the embassy. The gathering included Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, Assistant Director-General for Communications and Business Sector at the Sharjah Chamber, among other officials. During the meeting, Al Owais received an invitation for Sharjah’s participation, alongside an official delegation, at the upcoming Global Sourcing Expo 2026, scheduled to take place in Dhaka this November. This expo represents a crucial platform for facilitating communication between businesses and exploring potential trade and industrial collaborations.
Strengthening Economic Ties
Al Owais welcomed the Bangladeshi ambassador and expressed the Sharjah Chamber’s view of Bangladesh as a vital economic partner in South Asia. He pointed out that the MoU signed last year lays down a framework for fostering communication between companies and exchanging information about available opportunities. He emphasized the need to translate this framework into tangible initiatives and projects that benefit the business communities in both nations.
He added that economic relations between Sharjah and Bangladesh are on an upward trajectory, citing the emirate’s advanced infrastructure and strategic location that connects global markets. Al Owais reiterated the importance of providing incentives and facilitating a supportive legislative framework that promotes sustainable business operations, making Sharjah an ideal platform for Bangladeshi companies seeking to expand into regional markets.
Enhancing the Business Environment
The Bangladeshi embassy delegation expressed their gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the proactive role played by the Sharjah Chamber in bolstering the business environment, supporting investors, and nurturing bilateral relations. They conveyed their country’s commitment to deepening these ties and exploring broader avenues for cooperation. The Bangladeshi side also expressed interest in attracting investors and entrepreneurs from Sharjah, directing their investments towards strategic sectors such as pharmaceuticals, jute production, port management, infrastructure projects, and various manufacturing industries, highlighting that these areas form the foundation of Bangladesh’s economic development.
Showcasing Opportunities in Sharjah
The Sharjah Chamber extended an invitation to the Bangladeshi ambassador to visit specialized exhibitions hosted at the Sharjah Expo Center. These exhibitions often feature several Bangladeshi companies, demonstrating the chamber’s commitment to providing platforms for promoting products and services. The exhibition agenda throughout the year offers effective venues for showcasing Bangladeshi products in regional markets, in line with the MoU’s objectives to elevate collaboration in trade exhibitions.
The sectors for investment opportunities discussed during the meeting reflect the themes outlined in the MoU, where the Sharjah Chamber aims to facilitate cooperation between the business communities of Sharjah and Bangladesh in areas such as shipping, exporting, and logistics. At the same time, the Bangladeshi side has shown particular interest in e-commerce, medical services, and food industries, broadening the spectrum of opportunities available to both business communities.
In conclusion, both parties reaffirmed the importance of maintaining ongoing coordination, facilitating trade and investment exchanges, and collectively participating in trade exhibitions. These efforts are essential in enhancing the volume of trade and solidifying the economic partnership between the UAE and Bangladesh.
