الشارقة، The Sharjah Book Authority has announced that it will continue to accept nominations for the “Targuman Award” until 15 September 2026. This prestigious award, one of the most significant translation prizes globally, allocates a total of 1.4 million dirhams to winners, with the results to be announced during the opening ceremony of the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair.

The award is open to Arabic works that have released their first printed edition translated into any language worldwide from 2016 to 2026. The focus is on intellectual, cultural, and creative contributions that draw from or are inspired by Arab and Islamic civilisations. Its primary goal is to broaden the dissemination of Arabic literature in foreign publishing markets and encourage the translation of Arabic works into new languages. It is the first award of its kind to simultaneously recognise both foreign translations and the original Arabic works they are based on.

Expanding the Impact of Arabic Literature

Ahmad bin Rakkad Al Amiri, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sharjah Book Authority, stated, “The Targuman Award has granted Arabic literature a significant position in the relationship between Arab culture and the world. A work that transitions into a new language enlarges its reader base, entering various contexts—from research and criticism to education—thus enhancing its contribution to cultural discussions beyond its linguistic borders.” He further noted that the award assesses the value of the translated work based on two interrelated factors: the importance and intellectual merit of the original Arabic book and the quality of the translation in conveying its ideas.

Al Amiri added, “The Targuman Award embodies a practical aspect of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi’s vision to enhance the contribution of Arab intellectual output to the global knowledge movement. Under the guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, the award aligns with a careful reading of the path books take towards new markets, emphasizing the protection of publishing rights and sound translation practices.” He also highlighted that the distribution of the award’s value between the translator and the Arab and international publisher reflects a practical appreciation of each party’s role, encouraging professional relationships that may extend to other works, languages, and new markets.

Recognising Creative Contributors

The award allocates 910,000 dirhams, or 65% of the total prize, to the winning foreign publisher. The Arab publisher holding the rights to the original Arabic edition receives 390,000 dirhams, roughly 27.8%, while the translator of the winning work is awarded 100,000 dirhams.

Eligibility and Application Criteria

Interested individuals can visit the official website of the Sharjah International Book Fair to find detailed information regarding the nomination and participation criteria for the “Targuman Award,” ensuring submissions are submitted before the final deadline on 15 September 2026.
