Saudi Arabia Launches Initiative to Assist First-Time Homebuyers

In a significant move to enhance housing affordability, Saudi Arabia has announced support for first-time homebuyers through an extended mortgage program aimed at easing the path to homeownership. This initiative, backed by the Real Estate Development Fund (REDF), reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to housing and addresses the financial challenges many first-time buyers face when entering the real estate market.

The Kingdom has extended its Facilitated Mortgage Program for an additional three years, marking a major step in supporting first-time homebuyers and promoting housing accessibility throughout the nation.

The Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) applauded the Cabinet’s decision, highlighting it as a pivotal measure in empowering Saudi families and simplifying their journey toward homeownership. This program is now set to remain active until 2028.

Understanding Saudi Mortgage Support

REDF spokesperson Saeed Al Zahrani explained that the program serves as a financing solution tailored to facilitate the homeownership process. It significantly reduces the burden of down payments for beneficiaries seeking housing support.

This initiative lowers the required down payment for a first home from 10 percent to just 5 percent, making it more accessible for aspiring homeowners.

Furthermore, the program permits financing of up to 95 percent of the property’s total value, with a maximum limit of SR800,000 ($213,300). This flexibility applies to both under-construction and ready-to-move-in housing units, ensuring that various financial situations are accommodated.

Impact on Homeownership Rates

Al Zahrani emphasized that this initiative is a direct contribution to the Housing Program, a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030. The program has already aided over 638,000 individuals in taking their first steps onto the property ladder since its inception.

The extension of this support underscores the government’s long-term commitment to enhancing housing affordability, encouraging private sector engagement, and raising homeownership rates in alignment with national goals.

By reinforcing these initiatives, Saudi Arabia is working diligently toward a future where homeownership is within reach for more families, thereby strengthening the nation’s overall economic landscape.
