Saudi Arabia Launches Groundbreaking Food and Dining Regulations

Saudi Arabia is implementing significant new food and dining rules aimed at enhancing consumer awareness and promoting healthier eating habits. Announced by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), these major new regulations will take effect on July 1, 2025, marking a pivotal shift in how restaurants and cafes present nutritional information to their patrons.

Details of the New Food Regulations

Beginning July 1, 2025, food establishments will be required to provide clear and detailed nutritional information on their menus. This initiative is part of the broader regulations introduced by the SFDA, aimed at increasing transparency in food labeling.

Key aspects of these regulations include the introduction of a “saltshaker” label for meals high in sodium, a disclosure of caffeine content in beverages, and an indication of the estimated time required to burn off the calories from each meal. These requirements will apply to both physical menus and online ordering systems.

Encouraging Healthier Choices

Through these measures, the SFDA aims to empower consumers to make informed nutritional decisions when dining out. By promoting healthier options, the new food and dining rules seek to encourage a balanced lifestyle that aligns with health recommendations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises adults to limit sodium intake to 5 grams per day, which is roughly equivalent to one teaspoon. As for caffeine, adults should aim to consume no more than 400 mg daily, while pregnant women are recommended to limit intake to 200 mg.

Resources for Consumers and Establishments

To assist both food establishments and consumers in adhering to these new regulations, the SFDA has made available a “Caffeine Calculator” on its website. This tool enables individuals to track their caffeine consumption and better understand its daily limits in accordance with health guidelines.

For those interested in the specifics of the regulations, a copy can be accessed through the “Mwasfah” online store. This resource details everything from high-salt food labeling to caffeine content disclosure, ensuring that both consumers and businesses are well informed about the new rules.
